Hello rog, I'm a newbie to this site and to doing computer work...
Don't take this as a put down, but I think you may be in way over your head on this laptop. Installing an SSD and loading up Windows 7 on it is an easy operation. If Geek Squad can't get it to work and is reporting optical drive errors and startup errors after installing Windows, you could be looking at a lot of trouble. You want to get a laptop that runs stable right out of the box.
A) If I were in your situation, I would have them reinstall Windows 7 to the original HDD. If that operation was successful, return the SSD for a refund. It may be defective as @Zygo suggests.
Use and test all the features of the laptop while it's in stock configuration, particularly the optical drive, since they initially reported an error with it. See

Once your testing is completed, you can start adding applications and perhaps updating the video driver. Hold off on installing an SSD until you've had a chance to read and understand past threads on SSD installation in this forum.
B) If you encounter additional problems with your testing OR If Geek Squad cannot get the laptop to run stable by installing Windows on the HDD, ask for a replacement or refund immediately. Don't let them tell you they want to send it to ASUS for Warranty repair. If they can't simply reinstall Windows in one day to get it running, demand an exchange or refund.
Do not exceed the time you have to request an exchange or refund, whatever you do. Otherwise, you'll likely find it was a great deal for Best Buy - they got your money for a POS that spends most of its time in the repair shop while you remain in the "Land of the Lost".
