My new G75VW is randomly shutting down

Hey guys, I just purchased a G75VW and it seems to be randomly shutting down on me. I checked the settings in Windows 8 and am pretty sure that hibernation is disabled. It was the last one on clearance so an exchange isn't possible. Any ideas as far as troubleshooting goes? It seems to shutdown randomly whether it's while I'm playing a game or just browsing the web and I have to manually power it back on. Thanks in advance!

Overheating is a common cause of unexpected shutdowns where it appears like someone pulled the plug. Load up HWINFO64 and configure it to log CPU and GPU temperatures. What are they at idle with no other applications running?
What temperatures are achieved when the laptop shuts down?

If you enable the EC Sensor in HWINFO64, you can also monitor the GPU and CPU fan speeds. They should run about 2000 RPM at idle and ramp up to about 3500 - 4000 while gaming.

Power supply problems can also result in tbese shutdowns. Can your laptop boot up and run normally on just the power adapter with the battery removed?

It may be useful to test with another power adapter of equal or greater wattage.

did you install all drivers and utilities from asus support site? also check your ram is ok or not.

Thanks for the replies guys. The system boots just fine without the battery. Average use temperatures seem to hover around 37ish for the GPU and 40 for CPU. Fans during non-gaming sessions are at 2000rpm and ramp up to 2600rpm during 5 minutes of Diablo 3. All the drivers utilities from the Asus support site have been installed. I also flashed the BIOS to the latest version as well.

Do you guys have a program that you'd recommend to test the RAM out with? I was thinking of using Memtest86. I'm curious though. If RAM was the issue, wouldn't the system blue screen with some sort of memory dump info (as opposed to shutting down) once a bad area of memory was encountered?

1) Can you reproduce an unexpected shutdown with the battery removed?

2) If so, what were the last logged CPU and GPU temperatures?

3) memtest86+ is a good choice. Run at least 3 passes. It'll also test the memory controller of the CPU. A defective CPU can cause unexpected shutdowns.

Since you mention hibernation is disabled, I assume you've tried the things from the G75VW Reboot after Hibernation thread. You might also try removing your Power4Gear and InstantOn tools to try and diagnose your power issues.

I have the same problem with a G55vw, doesn't seem related to system load, in fact I haven't identified any kind of pattern at all thus far. No events are logged, usually only happens maybe once every few days, but have had two in a day a few times. Has occurred both while on AC or battery, and with Win 8 and now Win 7. I haven't altered the machine at all, have done the various drive/bios updates, no dice. It's pretty frustrating.

I'm going to check the hibernate fix thing and do a memtest pass, but I can at least report its not limited to the 17" model.

No i had the same problems in the beginning had it a few times.

And it had it 10 minutes ago.

And the really strange thing is when i started up my pc again it says it was installing Windows update and there weren't any updates.
And i even look up in the history of the last windows updates i installed and that was a few weeks ago..

(First time it says it was windows updating with randomly shutting down)

I have all latest updates of all my programmes and other things.

I just had the exact same thing happen to my G75VW a few minutes ago. I got a black screen (the thing had shut down unexpectedly and without shut down screen) and when windows started to come back online it said it was applying an update. I haven't paid much attention to the random shutdowns that I've had because it happens once every month or so. Should I be worried? Will this just get worse?

Wow...I too had this happen to me today for the very first (hopefully last) time. I have the G75VW-DS71. All drivers and Windows7 x64 all updated. Bios is updated as well. No overclock. I disabled hybernation along time ago. Ive uninstalled Power4Gear along time ago too. Still have Instant On running tho. My laptop is always plugged into my UPS which was very expensive and delivers nice "clean" power to the laptop. I was sitting here eating lunch, the computer was just sitting with Windows desktop showing and no apps running. It just instantly went off. When I turned it back on I got the usual prompt about Windows shutting down abnormally and gave me a choice to boot normal or go into safemode. I booted normal and all is fine so far. I have aida64 running and monitoring temps and right before it shut down I glanced up from eating and the temps were fine. I have my power setting set to shut off display after 30mins of no activity. I remember thinking at first that my screen should probably be getting ready to shut off cuz I had been away from computer to fix lunch. Does anyone think maybe instead of shutting down just screen that computer got stupid and shut off by accident? Anyways its not just you man, it has happened to loads of people who own these Asus RoG laptops. g/l
