My laptop's backlight is not working? [solved]

Hi everyone,
This is a bit of an odd one because I only noticed it like two days ago (and i've been using my laptop constantly since then). I'm currently running a 3 monitor setup (including my laptop as one monitor) and I use the keyboard on the laptop as the main keyboard until I get a mechanical external one. Anyways, I unplugged everything one time and took it to school with me and when I got home as I was coding away at night I realised I was having a hard time seeing the keys and I noticed the backlights were off. They still are, and I have no reasoning for why this might've happened. It's a g750JX from Dubai with specs of: i7 4700HQ, 24 gigs of ram, 1tb+256gig ssd, and I'm running on windows 8. It's about a month old now and I keep pressing the Fn + backlight brighten key (F4) and it's jsut not working. It's completely shut off and I have no clue why. Can anyone lend a hand? perhaps give me some insight on what might've happened? Also btw I should note this thing hasn't been bumped, scratched, or dropped even a tiny bit since i've bought it.

ok, so i have no other option but to send it back? if that's the case, i'm simply not doing that.

i contacted the company i originally bought it from called Computer Upgrade King. i asked them if there was any way i could fix it myself and they sent me a guide on how to open up top and make sure the keyboard ribbons were securely fastened. i tried to open this thing up but it's damn hard. they suggested using a pry tool, which i used, to get in between the speaker cover and the bottom, but it was nearly impossible. it eventually got to a point where it just wasn't worth putting dents and scratches on it.

thanks.

I forgot to mention checking the cables and connections, so thanks for remind me, but I'm a worrier and don't want anybody to get into trouble who should not be opening the unit.
Theoretically it is possible the cable for the keyboard light was disconnected if you have some way to check and fix this on your end.

If the keyboard light function for the replacement motherboard was not enabled though, it would need to be sent back to ASUS repair to fix this unless you are able to find other people who are able to do this.

Unfortunately, we don't have many 'authorized service centers' in the U.S. right now (these are in addition to the normal repair offices which ASUS support can arrange for you when you contact them), but if you are near or will be near one of them, you may want to look into having them check and fix your system.

Sorry this couldn't be easier.

it's ok, thanks for the help.

i'm not anywhere near a service center, unfortunately. i may just look into an outside repair service if and when i actually need this fixed.

thanks again,
mondo

fyi.

Outside repair services may be able to help check the cable connections for you, but may not have the tool to enable the keyboard backlight for the replacement motherboard if it's necessary, so something to be aware of.

very strange. i'm in the same exact situation.

i bought my G751JT from a company called "Computer Upgrade King." everything worked fine, but every time i'd boot up the screen would flicker and glitch, and sometimes it would fail to boot up at all, forcing a restart. so i sent it in, they took a look at it, then sent it in to Asus, and from there they replaced the motherboard. i just got the thing back today, and guess what. the keyboard backlight isn't working now. these are quite trivial things as far as overall performance goes, but it's nice to have a feature such as this as to not have to worry about having to see the damn thing.

i did just as Sampo did and installed the latest ATK, as well as an Intel chipset, of which an Asus support representative advised. now they're telling me to send it back ... but is it really worth the wait and the hassle of shipping it out again, all for a damn keyboard light?

i'd appreciate any insight or opinions you guys have on this

And I'm in the exact same situation as you two. G751 replaced motherboard and now the keyboard backlight no longer works. The keyboard backlight does not turn on during boot or any other time. After trying every ATK option, uninstalling and new installs etc, - I have opened up the laptop and re-seated all the ribbon cables. Still nothing. I've spent a lot of time researching and finally find the answer that makes sense from Albert.

CL-Albert thanks for specifying this is something the technicians forgot to enable. Please let me know how I can enable the backlight as this is very irritating for me! My laptop will be out of warranty soon anyway so please let me know how I can fix this issue.

Much appreciated.

http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=G751JT&p=3&s=719

uninstalled the old one using the bat file that was in the download (Rog Macrokey) , restarted , and installed the Macrokey .
Still cant turn on my keyboard backlight , isnt the Macrokey is only for the 3 Macro available with the laptop? or is there a thing i need to set up ?

i cant seem to find anything thats related with keyboard backlight in the Macrokey software.

Phew, I can confirm this worked! Had to mess around in bios enabling CSM and toggled secure boot feature and quick boot features (not sure if that changed anything, but initially I had trouble booting off the flash drive).

Much appreciated!
