Linux on G53JW

Due to ASUS ridiculous repair policies, I can't get a replacement until my notebook breaks for a 4th time.
I'm not going to go through the bother of installing W7U just for this, so I could either throw an XP copy or an Ubuntu or some other distro.

Anyone have experience with any particular distros on this model?

I'm only installing an OS so I can break the machine after all!

Haha, it ended up even though support thought they had corrupted my harddrive, they were just trying to boot from the wrong harddrive!

Crazy ASUS support, perhaps they aren't malicious after all... 😉

Still want to put LINUX on there? Ubuntu works, if you can stand the Unity interface. In the last 2 releases, it has become extremely buggy. I would recommend Fedora, since they have support for everything in the computer, including back-lit keyboard :), which has been really flaky otherwise.
I am disturbed because I cannot break my system...found out there were others trying to cope! We have a support group on here, if your system will not break, please join!

We now have 178 people whose systems will not break! Yippee! 🙂

same here! had do the same with my g74, and 2 HP Pavilions..

So you use Fedora as well? I used to be an Ubuntu fan, up till about 11.04. After that, the system just got buggy . Fedora 17 has a few bugs, but not the "Application Crashed" five-seven times on every boot. Fedora 16 works just fine though!

I ran a Fedora live disk that I had sitting around, it was not bad, but I'm not a huge Fedora fan really.

I run a light distro based on Ubunto 10.4 called Bodhi on a netbook which is really great, so I thought Ubuntu might be nice, but - as Zyg mentioned - I was worried about device support being flaky.

This machine is basically just for gaming and running large jobs, so W7pro and a dual boot in to some undecided distro... But for now I just have to wait for it to break so I can get it repaired...

Used to use Fedora/Redhat based distros (e.g. Scientific Linux, www.scientificlinux.org) but they were always buggy with even slightly dated hardware. My IT guy at work switched me on to Debian, and I gotta say I love it and the vast choice of packages you can add easily with synaptic. Yeah, Ubuntu Unity sucks 'orribly; fortunately with all other distros one still has a choice of Window manager. I like twm because its small and lean; I can boot my G74 in linux with X, twm and all the usual kernel processes using only 200M of RAM!

latest Ubuntu(12.04) supports sandy bridge and has a lot of battery optimizations, I get more battery there than on windows.... if u want full wifi driver support (wifi monitor mode and injection) use latest backtrack live USB, it works out of the box, whereas Ubuntu fails on this point... at least that's my experience on my g53sw...

I have an SSD though, is 12.04 trim enabled?
