Just Ordered A Refurbished G75VW-BHI7N07 From Newegg...

...And I'm hoping you kind folks (with much more knowledge than I) can help me out with suggestions of specific things to do (besides installing anti-virus software) once I take it out of the box. Perhaps also things NOT to do. Maybe specific things to test to make sure everything is functioning correctly, too. For ME, this is a lot of money to spend on a laptop, and I don't want to mess anything up. Thanks for any help given! 😄

like we said, download one of the Start menu replaces for Windows 8.

Already purchased StartisBack. Much happier now. But for some reason, at the moment I'm getting no sound. The speaker icon in the task bar has a red "X" on it. *sigh*

Does Fn+F12 turn the speakers back on?

No, it didn't. But when I restarted after some more Windows updates, the speakers were functioning normally. Man, the speakers on this thing sound like crap.

The speaker issue usually happens with Realtek Drivers. If you do have a Realtek sound chipset, consider updating the drivers

When you see the X icon, usually turning the volume slider up and down restores back the sound

Thanks for the reply! I don't remember for sure now, but moving the volume slider was probably the first thing I tried. 🙂

It appears that my G75 has a VIA audio chipset (unfortunately). So some G75s come with Realtek instead of VIA?

On a sidenote, from your sig, I see that you have a 17.3 foot display on yours! Portability must be an issue, huh? 😉

Oh no!!! The new ones are bad enough, you opted for a refurb!!! What were you thinking??? I'll sell you my BBK5 for the refurb price and mine came with Windows 7, and I'll throw in my copy of Windows 8!

I was thinking I'd save some cash going that route. I'd swear this thing is brand new, though (to look at it).

So I take it you aren't too thrilled with your G75?

Win 8 is a festering turd of an OS. If the "blue" update rumored to be coming doesn't make it right, I'll be going back to 7 or Linux.
