Is the GTX 670m on my G75 Defective?

I bought the Asus G75VS RS72 with the GTX 670m and after running furmark twice i am getting over 90C.

The first time i ran it was for the 15 minute option, i got up to 93 C now i thought it might be cause the vents were 6 inches from the wall or cause i was using the stock drivers that came with the laptop. Then i ran it again today with the latest beta driver 304. 79 and this time i was a foot and a half from the wall and my room door was open and doing the same benchmark option i got up to 91 C.

Looking at MSI afterburner i idle around 45-55 C (usually it just hovers from 43-49) and when i was playing Diablo 3 i was getting in the mid 70s C.

So is my GPU defective? Or is this normal for the GTX 670m?

What is the Temp of the room you are in. That Furmark temp seems high, almost 20°C higher than my furmark max score with a
670m, However my house is Air Conditioned and i have it set at 70°F, which makes a difference. I also Idle around 32 to 38°C. However if you are in a hot room, that could make some difference as to your high score. It could also be something else.

Are your fans pushing out the hot air? GPU fan is on the right side, so most of the heat should be exiting out the right side fan vent. Is it working?

Playing Diablo 3 at mid 70's isn't necessarily a bad thing, how long were you playing for for those temps, or do those temps stay around those temps for the entire time you play?

If you are in a warmer climate without AC, maybe invest in a laptop chill mat? I have a chill mat for my laptop, especially useful when playing a game for extended period of time.

Ok so i ran another test, this time i brought my laptop down stairs. I set my AC to 70F, put it on tiles, and it was in a large open room and not only that i kept the laptop less than 2 feet away from the AC vent. I ran the same furmark test and got up to 85C.

So you think something is wrong?

I'm pretty sure that during a stress test anything up to 85 would be ok. I think Ideal would be 70-75. Since you were able to get it down 7 or 8 degree's in a cooler room, that seems good. With a cooling mat you could probably get it down more.

Maybe someone with a lttle more knowelege on GPU temps would chime in....Jsl1ce, John, Cecil, etc...:D

but in order for me to get it to 85 i had to keep it in a large room, on tiles and next to the ac vent.

I called ASUS for a RMA but the only downside i will not have the laptop for two weeks. So i just want to be 100% sure something is wrong before i send it. This is my first gaming laptop in 4 years my last gaming laptop was a Gateway with a 9800GTS and that would get to mid 80s in the same room where i got 93C on the G75.

93 C does seem pretty high. Destroyer: Please install HWiNFO64 and launch it using the sensor only option checked. HWiNFO64 reports the fan speeds as well as the GPU temps (among other things). Have this open while running the 15 minute test in FurMark and report back the the fan speeds for the GPU. At max load the fan speeds should be in the mid to high 3000RPMs.

So i ran another test in my room (same place where i got 91 and 93) with AC temp at 70F and results still bad.
Burn in Score of 1514, GPU temp of 90C and RPM max was 3829 during the benchmark.

Yep, I would suggest even exchange at the retailer you bought it from if you are still in your return window or proceeding with the RMA if you can't return/exchange it.

this sounds like a faulty thermal paste job to me, you can either repaste it yourself, and be sure you did it right...

(it can be fun and not necessarily very hard, you can do this carefully w/out ripping the warranty stickers on a g74/73 but i havent tried this on a g75 although ive been thinking about it. using upgraded thermal paste on my g74/73 dropped the temps by ~7-10°C)

...or just return it and hope you get a decent one this time. its up to you, but if you arent a technical person, maybe just take the second option.

also, keep in mind that 670m's(Fermi) run hotter and use more power than the newer 660m's(Kepler), although your temp range is definitely beyond what is acceptable (diablo 3 doesnt usually get me past ~52°C in a hot room)... but hey... youre still running cooler than a macbook pro 🙂

If i knew how to use thermal paste on it i would do it myself. And since the retailer doesnt have any more in stock i have no choice but to use RMA the downside is i gotta drive 20 miles JUST to to go to a FedEX office for the RMA to drop it off.
