I've been running the latest version of the Windows 10 Tech Preview (build 10162) for the past 4 days and so far it's been working perfectly. I first did a fresh install on a separate partition to make sure all of the hardware worked, and once I was satisfied, I simply upgraded over Windows 8.1. I'll be keeping the previous Windows installation files for a little while longer in case I have to roll back to Windows 8.1.

I was mostly worried about touchpad and graphics performance, but so far I haven't had issues with either. All the Windows 8 drivers have been working perfectly on Windows 10. Gaming performance is the same, if not better, than Windows 8.1. Battery life has also been great (I've been getting 4-6 hours, depending on usage).

From a hardware perspective, any PC capable of running Windows 8.1 should be capable of running Windows 10. From a license perspective, with the exclusion of the Enterprise and RT editions of Windows, any valid Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 license is eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 10.

Regarding the G501JW specifically, it is Windows 10 ready. https://www.asus.com/Notebooks/G501JW/Windows-10-Upgrade/ provides details regarding the upgrade. The free upgrade offer is a limited-time promotion, i.e. "to take advantage of this free offer, you must upgrade to Windows 10 within one year of availability". If you do an in-place upgrade of Windows, any "bloatware" currently installed on Windows 8.1 will still be present after upgrading to Windows 10.

From an application perspective, current versions of applications which support Windows 8.1 should be compatible with Windows 10 (and many applications will be updated by their respective developers to explicitly support Windows 10 by the time it is released later this month), although, historically speaking, for any applications which don't get updated, I would be hesitant to guarantee that they will have 100% compatibility after a major OS upgrade. The "Get Windows 10" app should inform you of any potential compatibility issues. See the following article for more detail regarding the "Get Windows 10" app: http://www.intowindows.com/download-windows-10-upgrade-advisor/.

Notice:
When I contacted ASUS with several questions about the G501JW, I was told by an ASUS support representative that, "At this time, Technical Support cannot confirm if Windows 10 drivers will be uploaded for this model, but the chances are slim. Windows 10 drivers will only be available for products released in Q4 after the July 29th release of Windows 10." The representative did go on to say that, "The more recent your ASUS product is, the higher the chances for Windows 10 drivers to be uploaded."

I bought this laptop yesterday and i got a label that said "Plays well with windows 10" on it.
If you look at http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/G501JW/HelpDesk_Download/ you can see that we have some Windows10 drivers already.
For now only BIOS, ATK and Touchpad drivers. If there will be problems in windows 10 i think they will updaye the drivers needed.

I haven't received any notification for the update to windows 10. 😞 what i did was use Microsoft's MEDIATEK something and downloaded and installed windows 10. what happened was bad. all the preinstalled asus apps were gone and the ATK Backlit for the keyboard isn't working anymore. My GeForce Experience was deleted and the only thing that remained was the Realtek Audio. I NEED HELP GUY PLEASE.. :(((

Don't worry, just download the ATK Package from Asus' web site https://www.asus.com/Notebooks/G501JW/HelpDesk_Download/
And you'll get all Geforce stuff from here: http://www.geforce.com/drivers

You are welcome. I just got Win10 to work flawlessly in my G551 today after some struggle - it wasn't as easy as I thought but now everything seems to work just well.
I haven't seen any news yet about Asus making official Win10 release for G501 (or for any other current ROG models). So far they seem to ship only some 2-in-1 laptops with Win10 pre-installed.

is it okay to force update it? since microsoft realeased the MediaCreative to install windows 10 if you can't wait.
