Is it possible to add Blu Ray to G750JW?

BestBuy only stocked G750s with 8GB RAM and 1 HD. Rather than wait for a special order G750JH, the sales person and I configured a 750JW with more RAM and 250GB SSD. We both assumed it had Blu Ray, but just realized now that it doesn't. BestBuy is offering to swap the drive if they can find one. Does this sound reasonable?

(I have setup my 750JW in the month that I have had it and am reluctant to start again with a new one, but may have to.) I am in the USA.

I did this for my G750JW, added an LG BD-R combo DVD-RW. I have had a BD-RW before and found I didn't write any/many BD-RW's.

LG CT40N Slim 6X Blu-ray Reader/DVD Rewriter SATA Super-Multi Combo Drive, OEM

To replace it you remove the back/bottom panel, and find the screw that retains the drive - it screws into a bracket on the end of the drive - you also want to transfer that bracket to the new drive - then just pull out the DVD drive.

The dangerous part is removing the bezel from the DVD and placing it on the BD-R drive.

It is easy if you take it slow and smart - breaking the tabs of the plastic means you would need to use the stock one that comes with the BD-R - I didn't even move it myself I used the one that came with the BD-R - it didn't bother me that it was indented and flat instead of matching the curves of the G750.

The unfortunate thing is that the Asus DVD player that comes with the DVD version of the G750 doesn't recognize BD's, so you need to purchase a BD player program. I tried them all, and went with the subscription version of Cyberlink Ultra 13 called PowerDVD LIve:

Base software:
http://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdvd-ultra/features_en_US.html?&r=1

Subscription:
http://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdvd-live/features_en_US.html

You download a management program that downloads and installs the PowerDVD Ultra software and keeps it up to date.

For as often as I change machines, and move between them when I have them, I like that I don't have to keep a set of original install + update packages - which at times have required several installs to get to the point of current version.

I may change my mind when I forget to renew and run out of subscription time when I want to play a BD in the future 😉

I'm a bit surprised that ASUS doesn't have a Blu Ray player since their JY and JX models have Blu Ray... What's with that?! 😉

As a sales ploy it is perfect, they want to provide satisfaction in what is sold, and incentive to up sell that satisfaction 🙂

Although I am surprised that on the G750JH they put in a low end BD-R. There isn't another G750 model to up sell...
Drive : MAT****A BD-CMB UJ160
Type : Blu-ray COMBO DL

The UJ160 works great for playing Blu-rays, and I am not interested in writing Blu-ray discs, but the LG CT40N I added to the JW/JX specs out a bit better:

I still have the CT40N left over from the JW/JX, maybe I will try it in the JH 🙂

Or, maybe I will upgrade it to a LG Electronics BT30N
