I'm not crazy about the GeForce GTX 960M, nor am I enamored with the current state of 4K support (and there's little point in going 4K when coupled with a GTX 960M), but with the price of the G501JW-DS71 reduced to ≈ 1,700 USD, and with some resellers including a combination of promotional freebies, such as the
ROG Shuttle backpack,
GX850 mouse, and
Cerberus headset, it wouldn't be a terrible buy (in this regard, for the most part I am in agreement with the following assessment:

IF it weren't for the quality issues repeatedly mentioned in several threads in this forum.
In an ideal world, there would be a Broadwell (maybe i7-5700HQ?) or Skylake refresh of the G501JW, which had an FHD IPS matte display, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M, and which retained the PCIe SSD (

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-G501JW-FHD-Notebook-Review.145339.0.htmlIf you have a desktop computer capable of gaming, perhaps consider getting a humdrum laptop (ex. a Lenovo ThinkPad T or X model, Dell XPS, Apple MacBook, etc) for university that wouldn't be out of place in class or the library. If you are going the mobile-only route, I think you would be taking your chances with a G501JW-DS71. You might love it, or you might find it to be plagued by the same issues mentioned by others. It's really a shame. The DS71 could have been a great all-around laptop (and for some people who haven't experienced any issues, it might indeed be).
