Intel Rapid Storage Technology - Disappearing system tray icons

fountainhead

I noticed that when I install the IRST driver my system tray icons fail to update. For example, the IRST icon will say that IRST is not running when I know it is running. Or sometimes the icon won't show up at all. My Microsoft Security Essentials and Action Center icons also don't show up. I've also noticed that when you uninstall IRST something seems to go wrong because the Control Panel icon for IRST refuses to go away. Bottom line, this driver has some icon issues, lol. Any of you run into these problems and do you know how to fix them? I'm using a G74SX-BBK8. Thanks!

No...AFTER Windows. You just run the executable program, iata_enu_10.8.0.1003. But don't check that box for the Intel Control Center thingy.

(It's a Windows installer program.....you can only install it from within Windows.)

That link appears to be dead.

Whatever it is he's seeing....icon, GUI, Control Center....the latest version of the IRST is pretty straightforward. You just install it and forget it.

Well yes, it works, in that sense. But it messes up my system tray which is a big problem for me. I still think there's something screwy with the way I've installed it. Gonna try another fresh install following this text I just found in the readme:

"If you are installing the operating system on a system configured for RAID or AHCI mode, you must pre-install the Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology driver using the F6 installation method described in section 5.3."

Ok, so I've at least figured out that the system tray icons haven't really disappeared, but for some reason they take much longer to show up. Seems to be the MSE and Action Center that take longer. They only show up after maybe 5 minutes.

But I now have a more urgent problem: I can't reinstall IRST. After uninstalling, when I try to run the setup again it installs a few files and then tells me "The setup program failed to install one or more device drivers." I suppose I can go to device manager and use the "Update driver" button but is this really how it's supposed to work? How are you supposed to update IRST to a new version if it does this every time?

I'm having this issue again where I can't install RST because it stops in the middle of the installation and gives me the error message "The setup program failed to install one or more device drivers." Last time, I only was able to solve this by doing a clean Windows install. But since I updated my chipset drivers, the RST icon has been saying the service isn't running, and then the application crashes when I try to open it. So I tried to do an uninstall/reinstall and now I'm confronted with that error message. Any ideas? I can't believe I'm the only one with this problem since I generally stick to the book when it comes to installing/uninstalling drivers.

Hi have you managed to solve this problem? I'm having exactly the same one... No matter what I do the Intel RST won't install...

I ran into this one... Here's how it got broken, first, though:

I had installed IRST very early on. Under "Intel...SATA AHCI Controller" in Device Mgr, clicking "Driver Details" there was ONLY iaStor.sys. Pretty sure seeing this one file indicates IRST is installed properly.

Then I found an updated chipset INF driver and installed it, which I didn't realize at the time knocked out the IRST driver and replaced iaStor.sys with the standard Win7 driver files.

Later, I found an IRST update and tried to install, but it errored out with "Setup program failed to install one or more device drivers" and uninstalling/reinstalling/rebooting made no difference.

Now to fixing it:

IIRC, I had to find the same version IRST driver-only download* to match the version that had been installed before the INF update and extract the files to a folder. The driver files of all versions should look something like the following:

iaahci.cat
iaAHCI.inf
iastor.cat
iaStor.inf
iaStor.sys
TXTSETUP.OEM

*I can't remember if Intel offers the driver-only IRST files or not. My memory sucks! 😮 In a pinch, they can be nabbed from an installer pkg by running the install, searching the TEMP folder for the extracted files and copying them out before closing the installer.

Go to Device Mgr, click "Update Driver" under the Intel...RAID/AHCI Controller and "Browse My Comp", to the driver folder. Reboot as directed.

I think at first I tried to do the manual update with a different version of the files from what was originally installed and the IRST installer still choked after the reboot, but I'm not sure. Anyway, if anybody tries a different version of the files and a different version of IRST installer works fine after the reboot let me know and I'll pull the "same version" thing out.

Finally, after the reboot and once iastor.sys was alone and in charge again the IRST installer worked OK. Good luck!

EDIT: Attached file contains driver-only files from v10.8.0.1003 (latest version I think) in case anybody needs or wants to try them.
