Idle Temps on G53

@Illuvatar and I were discussing the idle temps on the G53SW/SX, and we thought it might be helpful to others. Here is our discussion so far:

I don't know if you have noticed my other thread, but my g53 is running a lot hotter than I think is good and i've been looking for another g53 owner. What gpu do you have in yours?
My idle temp for the 460m is around 50°C, so I'm eager to know what your idle temp is?

Under LINUX, which tends to run the Graphics cards (mine's the 128-bit 560M, by the way), sits about 45-48 C (113-118 F). That isn't all that much warmer than mine, provided your GPU is running at maximum frequency. Under Windows, the temperatures are a little lower (39-40 C), so you should have no worries. If you can clean out the fans, try that, but otherwise, it is fine. The killer for electronics is not the 50 C, but 90 C. Intel CPUs, for example, are designed to run at up to 80-90+ C. What are your temps under load?

Yes I took the laptop apart yesterday but there was no dust at all. I wasnt worried about the temps before, but when I ran 3dmark vantage my laptop just turned off, so I thought the gpu was getting too warm. I will look at under load temps and get back to you.

Another question: is your right fan constantly spinning or does it go really quiet when you're not doing much? Everyone says these notebooks are so quiet, but my fan is running quite loudly all the time. Not as bad as under load, but still well noticeable.

I too am interested in your idle temps, and yes, my right fan is spinning constantly. Quiet, but constant. If you take the laptop apart--as you said--you will see (also through the grating on the bottom) that the right fan (on left if the notebook is upside down) is the GPU, which in my case runs 45+ C at "idle". The fan is running to keep the temperature down, which is a testament to the quality of the cooling solution ASUS put in.

Any chance we can start a new thread on this? I think that others might benefit from it. Let me know, and one of us can create a new thread.

Yes that would be great. You can go ahead and create one, I will join in. I will run a few more benchmarks and analyse my temps. Right now my idle temp is at 54°C lol, I'll see how hot it gets under load.

Mine's also at around 48-50oC when staying idle. Even when i use the cooling pad it doesn't seem to change at all.

Cooling pad shouldn't help as the intake is not on the bottem if i remember right.

It would be weird if those high temperatures were normal on the g53. I've emailed asus to get an official verdict on this.
Today I installed that new driver 296.16 and tried to run 3dmark vantage. Again during test number 3 my g53sw turned off.
This time I had logs running and was able to analyse my temps.

The highest gpu temperature was 84°C but when the computer turned off (20sec later) it was only on 79°C. On average the gpu temp was around 80 which I think is not too bad? Other ideas on that are welcome.

However, the cpu temp went up to 98 just when the laptop crashed.
So I think the problem with that crash is more the cpu than the gpu.
It seems weird that I can't finish that benchmark, maybe some of you could try it and report back.
I will try some other benchmarking tools and see what happens there.

@Holy is right, the cooling pad does not help. I have compared it, and it makes no difference.

@illuvatar, it is the CPU that is killing the system, not the GPU. 98 C is very believable to hit the thermal kill-switch on the Intel chips. The only thing that I can think of is that the thermal grease on the CPU has failed, which would explain why the system is crashing under load. If your system is under warranty, send it back for repair. Otherwise, you may want to look into regreasing the CPU yourself. If you choose to do this yourself, ask around the deskop builder's forum, I am sure there are experts over there who would be willing to help you out.

Do you think you could run 3dmark vantage and see if your's also crashes?
My laptop only just got a new mainboard and gpu, I don't know if the guys at the repair centre screwed something up? How could they forget to put paste on.

They almost certainly put it on, but probably didn't put it on well.

I can try, but where do I download it. If you provide me the instructions, I will give it a try tomorrow.

Maybe we should both download and run 3dmark11 and/or 3dmark06. Notebookreview [dot] com did a review of the G53SX, and included the results of the G53SW for comparison:

That would establish a benchmark of the performance of the computers.

Also, which nVidia drivers are you using? I am running 296.16, the one recently put out by ASUS for the ROG line.
