I need help with configuring my new HDD

D_MaULeR

Hi there I recently bought a new SSHD for my G750JX to supplement the cramped 750GB single HDD that was already included in the laptop. After installing the SSHD into the second drive bay, the BIOS detected the SATA port and I was able to assign a drive alphabet to it.

As i wanted to have the new SSHD to become my new boot drive and my old HDD to become an extra storage space, I also cloned the contents of the original drive onto the new drive. But the problem starts when i was unable to select the boot option to boot from the SSHD instead of the original HDD. I also tried accessing the UEFI BIOS and the only boot option that came out was the original HDD. I have also attempted to disable secure boot and enable legacy option but I don't see the option to boot from my new SSHD(despite oth Win8 and BIOS detecting it).

Would anyone be so kind as to show me the steps to configure the computer to boot from the new drive instead of the old drive? the problem im having right now is that BIOS is not showing the option to select my new SSHD. ( The only options available are Windows Boot Manager and my DVD drive).

I would gladly appreciate your responses!

Alright I have the G 750 JW and it came with a single 1 TB HD, so I replaced it with a SSD. Got everything up and running great on the new SSD but the advice I need is on getting the factory HD to be recognized by the computer in the 2nd bay. Naturally I want to use it for back up and storage but after installing it I cannot get it to show up in the disk manager or anywhere? I heard something about installing the Intel rapid storage driver but I have never done this before so I don't know what that means? Can someone help a new Asus owner out here please?

Hey Tabeletta. you have to install your SSD on your ASUS G750 laptop and install everything on your SSD including Operating System. after you've installed everything on your SSD, then you should install the second HDD in your laptop and turn on your laptop and go to BIOS and reset BIOS to default setting, save BIOS setting, then restart your G750. this is what I done in order to get my HDD to be recognized in Windows. if you don't see it in Windows Explorer, then you should go to ''Create and format hard disk Partition'' or ''disk management''

Thanks for the quick response, the trouble is with the HD installed the laptop does not give the option to go to the Bios at start-up, it goes start to Windows in less than 1 second? I already checked the Disk Management and there is nothing to Format, it's like the computer does not even know the factory HD is installed in the second bay? BTW, I have the OS installed on the SSD and it works just fine, I simply can't get the HD to show? Thanks for any further advice...

My G750 JH behaves the same way - shows no Bios Post when turn on but goes straight to Win8.
What I do to access the Bios is turn off the PC. Press and hold the F2 key and then start the PC and it starts up in the Bios.

Alright I think I figured out the issue. I read in another thread about updating the drivers and so I found a great free program called Slimdrivers which does this for free but takes a while. Of course I checked a lot of reviews on it before downloading and after I was confident it was a legit program I proceeded. After running a scan on the brand new system it had 15 out-of-date drivers. I assume this is due to the fact that this was the last G750 that BB had in stock and it may have been in the back for a couple months and so drivers got out dated? Anyway, I downloaded the most recent drivers and did a restart. Went back into the computer management and low and behold there was the 1 TB HD from the 2nd bay showing up and being seen by the computer. The issue was obviously an out date driver, not sure which one out of the 15 it was but updating them fixed my issue. Once again after restarting the system it jumped start into Windows, but after trying again and holding F2 I was able to access the BIOsand I now believe that with the SSD installed and not many start-up programs the computer simply boots up so fast that I don't see the message to enter the Bios. No complaints there obviously, just never seen that before. So all is well finally, thanks for the advice fellas and I hope this helps someone else. Take care... Asus and their owners are the best!

Glad you got it worked out 🙂

Updates for Windows are a fact of life, always needed, practically a weekly event - Tuesday, actually - that is when Microsoft releases updates.

Drivers updates can be downloaded from the Asus download areas for all 3 G750 base machines, the JW/JX/JH - Asus has recently posted the newest 8.1 updates to the JW section. You can download the latest driver for each category/hardware type that your laptop has and install them manually.

Doing it yourself really is the best way to do it, if forces you to know what is in your laptop and see the progression of updates for each package. It takes more time than clicking a button on an automatic program, but it is more rewarding 🙂

Even though the automatic program found 15 updates for you, you might double check to see if there are newer versions on the Asus download site for the JW/JX/JH - I don't know if that program got the driver updates from Asus, the OEM providers of the hardware components, or the .RU site that includes helpful spyware and bot tools for future use 😉

I can assure you if you insist on getting drivers from 3rd party sources you will eventually get burned. Always verify the source of the driver/software before downloading/installing, check the md5 checksums if available, and scan the packages before install with your favorite anti-virus / malware tools.

But, you got one thing right, always update to the latest drivers and versions of your software - that is the first thing I check after installing NIS and making sure my privacy settings are locked down. Make sure you are as safe as you can be.

If you want, since you just started out on this laptop, you could do a complete F9 restore from the recovery partition, and then install the driver updates from the Asus site - that way you can be sure that you have a uninfected machine - if you don't do it now, you will always wonder if you started with a compromised system...

http://www.techsupportalert.com/freeware-forum/freeware-installation-and-usage/11512-slimdriver-warn...

You can find lots of examples of problems using driver update software, it is just impossible to remove the possibility of getting problematic installs from those programs.

It isn't that difficult to do it yourself. Have some faith in yourself and push through the uncertainties - it is a rewarding experience that will give you confidence in other areas of life as well. 🙂

Sorry I'm a Windows 8 Hater and always will be. I see no logical reason to run windows 8 unless you have a touch screen PERIOD! That is why I run windows 7 on my G750. What really sucks with Asus Back tracker if you have 2 drives installed it will make 2 partitions on your second drive. Now how stupid is that? Feel sorry for people that run W8. Now it seems that W8.1 is even worse! Sorry to hear you guys seem to have so much trouble with W8 and W8.1

man. don't know why you hate Windows 8/ 8.1. this is the latest beautiful OS so far. I am satisfied with windows 8/ 8.1 on my G750JX. have no issue so far. try to update your G750 with windows 8/8.1 drivers from ASUS.
