I need help with configuring my new HDD

Hi there I recently bought a new SSHD for my G750JX to supplement the cramped 750GB single HDD that was already included in the laptop. After installing the SSHD into the second drive bay, the BIOS detected the SATA port and I was able to assign a drive alphabet to it.

As i wanted to have the new SSHD to become my new boot drive and my old HDD to become an extra storage space, I also cloned the contents of the original drive onto the new drive. But the problem starts when i was unable to select the boot option to boot from the SSHD instead of the original HDD. I also tried accessing the UEFI BIOS and the only boot option that came out was the original HDD. I have also attempted to disable secure boot and enable legacy option but I don't see the option to boot from my new SSHD(despite oth Win8 and BIOS detecting it).

Would anyone be so kind as to show me the steps to configure the computer to boot from the new drive instead of the old drive? the problem im having right now is that BIOS is not showing the option to select my new SSHD. ( The only options available are Windows Boot Manager and my DVD drive).

I would gladly appreciate your responses!

Do you have anything installed on the drive? If it doesn't have a bootable operating system on it, then there will be no option. If you have, check the boot order settings under SATA. If the drive isn't marked as bootable, then the BIOS won't offer it as a boot option, even though it is detected.

Are you on Windows 8.1?
Cloning or restoring system images with Windows 8.1 is really complicated - I wasn't able to make it work and ended up just doing a fresh install.

I would make an Image or clone the drive using Macrium Reflect.

Make an image of the HDD, then just re-image it to the new SSD or clone the HDD to the new SSD. When your finish go into the BIOS and change the boot priority .

Yup im running on Windows 8.1, seems like everyone's having the same problem with booting it from a secondary drive. I ended up doing a fresh install after much thought.

When I did it I swapped the SSD into the position the HD was in originally, and removed the HD from the laptop before booting on the SSD for the first time.

I have learned over time that it is best to not have the bootable original drive and the bootable clone drive in the same machine at the same time.

I put the original HD into a USB 3.0 external case to be able to use the DATA partition space for image backups, and preserved the C drive config in case I trashed my cloned drive.

Taking the HD out of the laptop removes heat and power draw, and for the most part I run without the external HD - only using it for backups.

I would suggest getting another HD/SSD if you want a 2nd bay storage device, and set the original configured HD aside in case you need to swap it in for service. Asus likes everything to be stock when they receive it for service.

This skirts the problem of learning how to use the new UEFI when you are just trying to get your new fast SSD working 🙂

in order to be able to boot to your SSHD, you must install SSHD in your laptop and restore or clean install your Operating System without another HDD or SSD in your laptop. after you restored or installed everything on your new SSHD, then you can install your second HDD or SSD in your laptop. also be sure to reset the BIOS to default after installed the second HDD or SSD. this worked for me...and it should work for you too... ASUS Backtracker is also good option to backup and restore your factory Operating Systems and settings.

Thanks for all you guys have done, I will keep this in mind for the future, since I haven't had to clone drives before. I always install a fresh copy of Windows, along with all my programs.

Sorry I'm a Windows 8 Hater and always will be. I see no logical reason to run windows 8 unless you have a touch screen PERIOD! That is why I run windows 7 on my G750. What really sucks with Asus Back tracker if you have 2 drives installed it will make 2 partitions on your second drive. Now how stupid is that? Feel sorry for people that run W8. Now it seems that W8.1 is even worse! Sorry to hear you guys seem to have so much trouble with W8 and W8.1

Alright I have the G 750 JW and it came with a single 1 TB HD, so I replaced it with a SSD. Got everything up and running great on the new SSD but the advice I need is on getting the factory HD to be recognized by the computer in the 2nd bay. Naturally I want to use it for back up and storage but after installing it I cannot get it to show up in the disk manager or anywhere? I heard something about installing the Intel rapid storage driver but I have never done this before so I don't know what that means? Can someone help a new Asus owner out here please?
