How to keep G74 running with the Top closed???

90% of the time my G74SX sits on my desk and never moves.

So I figured why be hobbled by the built in monitor and sound?

I've got a 1080P monitor handy with HDMI input and a woofer and 2 speaker Logitech sound system laying around that works just fine. Got a USB keyboard left over from an older PC so why not hook them up and just stash the G74 under my desk.

Can this be done and used while the top is closed? Is there a FN key press that will keep the G74 running while the top is closed and the external devices are hooked up?

Haven't tried hooking everything up yet as the sound and keyboard stuff are hiding in a box somewhere in the attic and it's over a 100 degrees up there this time of year. Got no desire to tromp around up there in that heat if what I want to do can't be done.

I've looked into Universal Laptop Docking Stations but they don't seem to be what I want - besides why spend 80 to 150 dollars when hooking up a few cables by hand would work just as good.

Thanks ahead of time for any insight into this issue.

Just to reinforce what jonfl1 posted:
-Go to Windows Control Panel > Power Options > (click) Choose what closing the lid does
> When I close the lid > Do nothing (DC or AC options) > Save changes > Exit.

Universal docking stations have the issue that they are run from USB and usually do not (read "never") have good performance. While they USB monitors are OK for basic, static windows, I would not try to run games on it. If your laptop never moves, then the issues of connecting/reconnecting cables go away. The cables are designed to be connected and disconnected many times, provided that you are careful when you do so.
I am disturbed because I cannot break my system...found out there were others trying to cope! We have a support group on here, if your system will not break, please join!
