GPU overheating on a G51VX

Hello,
I started noticing problems with my video card about a month ago. When playing games, it seems to work fine for about 30 minutes and then the performance drops. The framerate drops and my game becomes choppy. When quitting out of the game, I discovered that the temperature of GPU is 108° C(Even with a cooling pad under it) . Doing more tests, I discover that the GPU is idling at 83° C. I really don’t think that is supposed to happen.

My guess is that my card isn’t getting good ventilation and is overheating. I’m guessing what is happening is this. When it hits the critical temperature, the video card cuts the performance of the GPU to save it from any damage. I can hear the GPU fan going but it doesn’t sound like it’s grinding against anything so I don’t think there is anything wrong with the GPU fan. Could it be that the output vents be clogged with dust?

Any Ideas what to do?

hey henry, if youve never cleaned out your vents, its most likely that causing your heat issues. you should pop open the panel underneath and get a aircan and blow out of the chassis. you can even blow into the fan. dont blow into the case because you will just clog up more dust and push it into the fan.

x2

definately time to pick up a can of compressed air from your local walmart. i would also suggest taking off the back panel so that the dust can come out. blow as much as you can out, then blow back in through the vents. make sure you have your battery out as well.

i have the same problem with GPU's heat also on my G51VX. until now i still don't get good solution for this problem, i already changed thermal paste, and clean HFS. playing game for a few minutes, the GPU goes 100 degrees. Right now i always open my cpu cover.

but have you cleaned the fan?

if that doesn't work, do what i did, make a cooling fan.

i hope you didnt take off the gpu thermal pad and replace it with thermal paste, or even put thermal paste and then the thermal pad. this will increase your temps on the gpu. the Thermal pad actually has some spacing between the gpu and heatsink contact. using thermal paste will not have enough contact to transfer heat.
