Getting ready for a G75 and Hello World!

Greetings all,

I'm on the verge of purchasing a ASUS G75VX-BHI7N09 from Xotic PC. I've been lurking on the forums for several weeks, checking out the difficulties various folks are having with this platform, as well as various vendors. I've been on NBR doing the same and noticed a few issues that I was hoping those of you that already own could either confirm or deny:

• The G75's with the matte display seem to appear grainy and there is also a problem with horizontal gray lines appearing in black areas when playing games.
  
• The subwoofer has some sort of driver related issue.
  
• Repasting the CPU/GPU seems to be hit and miss.
  

I've elected to try and work around a few of these issues by having XPC install a higher quality display and repaste the CPU/GPU.

Now, I know the G750 is here and looks to be pretty awesome. However, both the GTX700s and the Haswell processors don't look to deliver a comparable gain in performance relative to the amount I'd be spending should I elect to go for the cutting edge. If I'm missing something then I'd love to hear what you all have to say. I'm decidedly on the fence about my next rig but the G75VX looks to be pretty killer from a performance and price perspective. To be sure, I've considered MSI/Sager as well but there are an awful bunch of horror stories floating about multi month long RMA struggles and shoddy customer service. Plus, the G75 just looks...well...pretty damn awesome (much better than the Clevo form factor).

Is already fixed with an update and you can improve it a little more with changing some sound settings.

I have never seen that on my laptop (maybe I’m blind XD) but I heard that some people experience this problem and they changed some colour settings in the NIVIDIA configuration screen and that seem to helped.

Thanks! I figure if you consider that people that are having problems probably make up less than 10% of the units in use and that nearly all of them do get resolved, I don't see how this purchase is a bad move. The G75 is simply the best you can get dollar for dollar. It isn't bleeding edge but I'd bet it's still future proof for a while yet.

I'd second that. The best gaming laptops always command a very significant price premium, whereas the ASUS notebooks are cheaper, but still provide great performance. I would recommend them, and the point about the statistics of the number of problems is important. A support forum (which the laptop section pretty much is) is by its nature going to b frequented by people who are having problems with their computers, whereas the people whose computers are working fine generally don't frequent these places.

Well, my G75 is on order through Xotic PC. Honestly, the last laptop I bought was more than two years ago (a then mediocre and now horrible HP DV7T, my left hand roasts so!) and I've never purchased from one of these custom houses before. So far it's been mostly pleasant. I ordered the VX with double the stock RAM, upgraded the display to a higher gamut and glossy. The HDD is a hybrid, I'm not entirely satisfied by SDD performance and will wait until the warranty goes before upgrading. With rush production I figure it should be here late next week or early the following. Needless to say, I'm a freakin live wire at the moment. I can't wait!!

Cool, let us know how it all comes out. Were they repasting the CPU And GPU for you?
I don't understand" I'm not entirely satisfied by SDD performance" ???? Mines not even a fast one, Lite On. Compared to a Samsun 840 Pro. I can't find anything to fault it at all. Going strong for a year now. My First SSD I find it amazing the best upgrade since the Pentium Processor or windows 2000

That is going to be awesome! 🙂 Those hybrid drives are really fast - I have one of the original Seagate Momentus XT series. On LINUX boot, it is especially fast: 15 seconds or so. :cool:

I have had my G75VW for a little over a year now and I have had no issues at all..Its simply amazing.
I did a clean OS install on a Samsun 840 Pro and its been blazing fast.
BUT...I am getting ready to replace my 660m VGA with a 670M as soon as my heat sink gets here..
No issues with my 660m just upgrading is all.

I think you made a good decision to purchase this way. I believe this is what I will do for my next notebook the extra few dollars would be well worth it to me.
