G771JW moving OS from existing 2.5" SSD to new M.2 ssd

So I'm buying a new M.2 form factor SSD to replace my old Kingston SSD(which is occupying 1 HDD slot which I mean to use for expanding storage with a 2TB drive).

My G771JW came with no OS installed and a 1TB HDD. I fitted my old SSD in it and installed my retail copy of Win 8.1. So now I wish to transfer my OS disk to the new M.2 ssd. I know cloning and moving is frowned upon but I really don't wanna do a fresh install because Win 10 is just around the corner and I'll do a clean install then.

So what would be the best way to go about doing this?

One more thing; I just opened the HDD/RAM cover on my laptop and I'm missing the plastic cover that goes over the M.2 SSD. Is it safe to install the SSD without it? My box doesn't contain it either.

I use Macrium Reflect the free edition will work for a clone or image. Be sure to test your recovery USB or DVD before starting the actual clone or Image recovery.

I have the G771, which has a different bracket:

I don't think the one you linked fits it. So installing a M.2 ssd without it is a no go?

This is the ssd I want to install.

I wouldn't worry about it the card is very light just tape in into place. or continue to locate a adapter plate

Cheers mate. I've been googling about the cover plate but had no luck. Seems this model isn't very popular. 😛

The card is very light, I don't think it should be a problem. I'll try and improvise something.

Kinda jealous of the drive layout, much better than what we get with the g751. This is definitely something that could be improved on the g752.

If you throw me the exact dimensions of the opening in mm and distance between center of eyehole to eyehole ill put a 3d printed one up on shapeways for you. But make sure the dimensions are exact i can only go off your measurements.

Ya i agree but with that layout you would loose the cooling channels that makes the g751 the coolest running flagship laptop available. If your 4870 and 980m started throttling you wouldnt care how nice the layout was. Sacrifice is the name of the game. Ask the gt80 and gt72 users who whine about thermal throttling and fan noise on the msi forums. I let my msi gt80 go after 3 different replacements all had qc and heat issues. Lets all just hope they remove the 2.5 slots completely and just use 2 or 3 pci m.2s that would be a huge space saver and maybe have all the ram slots avail under the cover for newbies that dont feel comfortable disassembling.
