G75VX vs. G75VW Australia

Hi Guys

First foray onto this Forum and new proud owner of the B.U.F.F. (Big Ugly Fat ....) G75VX.

NB - I'm am not technical and much of this is based on research rather than my own knowledge. I wouldn't know where to start with install operating systems, switching drives, adding cards etc.

I'd been researching for months and had G75 in pretty much a straight shootout with the Alienware. Price wasn't an objective as lets face it. If you're worried about 200-300 bucks in either direction then you'd probably want to reconsider spending 4 figures on a laptop. Why no Mac? most of my mates said.... I don't like Apple - pure and simple, I have a Blackberry.

So over here, in sunny Australia it appears we have limited choices when it comes to the G75. High street stalls, such as JB-HiFi, stock the G75vx and online retaillers go with the G75vw. The difference in specs appear slight.

From what I've seen the main differences:
VX
+ Core i7 - 3630QM
+ Processor Speed (GHz) 2.40
+ Processor Max Speed (GHz) 3.40
= Memory Installed RAM 16GB
- Hard Drive Size 1TB + 500GB
+ nVIDIA Graphics Card Type GeForce GTX 670MX Graphics Card Memory 3GB
? Windows 8
- Manufacturers Express Warranty (months) 12
c$2500 AUD

VW
- Core i7 3610QM
- 2.3Ghz (Turbo 3.3G)/6M
? Windows7
= 16GB (4GB x4) DDR3 1600 SODIMM SDRAM, Max 16GB
- 3GB DDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 670M
+ 1 x 256GB SSD + 1 x TB HDD
+ Warranty: 2-year limited global hardware warranty; 1-year battery pack warranty
c$2200 AUD

So - I went with the better GPU and CPU and lost out on the SSD. Something that is easy to rectify should I so wish (apparently.) and let's be honest - if you haven't had an SSD before, like me, you won't know what you're missing.

Spent most of the evening uploading and transferring old files etc but then got onto testing 🙂

Opening battle scene of Gladiator..... wow... I sh!t you not when I say that this looked far better than when I ran the same scene on my Samsung Series 7 LED HD 46" TV played via a PS3. Don't be fooled by all the bad press on the speakers -- they are perfectly decent for a laptop and I am not unhappy in anyway.

Multiple processes / installs / windows open etc. - Computer struggled a bit and felt quite groggy in place. Otherwise no dramas.

Windows 8..... wtf..... not a fan personally. Moved the desktop shortcut icon to the top left of the app list and just click through. Might have it's merits when I get used to it though. Give it some time I think.
NB - look up WDF_VIOLATION with Windows 8 and iTunes... big issues that prompts blue screen.

Feel and size - - no sh!t... this guy is MASSIVE but feels and looks a lot better in the flesh than it does in the pictures. I chose this laptop for power and cooling - not for being able to unplug and walking about. Not unplugged yet and unlikely to do so to be honest. This means that you can sit next to the missus while she watches sex and the city and you kill stuff. It prolongs your relationships by meaning that you don't have to hide in a room with a full desktop tower. 🙂 No plug near your couch... get an extension lead for $10!!!

Games - watch this space. Had a dabble on footy manager and no issues whatsoever (this used to put my Samsung R590 into thermal shutdown though).

Cooling vents access - checked and A.OK... filters in and spares in the box too... lovely touch. Ran heavy installing etc and it never got hot.

Bloatware - not much to be honest, not compared to my old Samsung anyway which was loaded with junk!

Be in touch when I've had more time to play. 🙂 🙂

PS - Any thing you want me to try, look at specifically etc. Let me know.

Congrats on your new rig, you should test some graphics intensive games, see how the GTX 670MX handles the load. Now if only there's a way to buy the VX from Australia and get it shipped to the States so I don't have to wait until freakin' March!

Shipping costs will be prohibitive and the Aussie Dollar is far too strong to consider it. Interesting that we got it earlier though as all the setting are US when you set up and you have to spend an hour changing everything (clocks etc) to localise it.

Not sure what my first game splurge is going to be - might be an RPG as the missus bizarrely likes to get involved with them too. Especially if it involves "little fluffy creatures"... although a good crime busting game might suffice to get her away from the 900th back to back Law and Order 🙂

For S's and Giggles - Postage is $181.80AUD + Laptop list price $2680 - (i got 10% off :)) = $2861.80 .. current exchange rate = 1.00AUD/1.04USD = $2979.84 😉

I own a g75vW and I am a little confused as the actual sticker on this laptop shows NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 660M - 2GB. You state that it comes with a 670M - 3GB? Is yours custom made or is mine? LOL Is yours a "newer" model in the hopes ASUS would sell more of them etc? I am sorry as I am not "tech swavy", what am I missing here? lol 39377

There are many versions of the G75VW all having different Screens, different GPU's and different ram configurations. The 660m were usually in the 3D models while the 670m were in the higher end versions see my spec in my signature. I guess the G75VX were the same with having different configurations. Best Buy has their own version so does other major retailors. Asus I think originally had 4 versions then the retailors have there versions. Best Buy is a good example they have really cheap screen put in Slow hard drive and small configurations of RAM and sell them cheaper than other stores, many like you are fooled thinking they are all the same going for the cheaper price then spending money to upgrade later.

The G75VX some had the 670MX GPU
