I have had this model for a little over three months now. Massive upgrade from my Acer Aspire that had a AMD dual core processor at 1.75 MHz.
I am totally loving this thing! I've recently come across extra 1K. Definitely going to upgrade some parts.
I was thinking about this SSD: SAMSUNG 840 EVO
Sounds like a good drive any SSD is better than hard driveThese memory sticks: GSkill RipJaws
You have to match the Voltage and timings of the ram you already have onboard! If you change the 2 sticks under the keyboard you'll void your warranty, so if you going to change those two out for 24 or 32 GB I would still keep the timing close to what you have from the factory
And this hard drive for storage: Seagate Hybrid Drive
Probably overkill for a storage drive. These Hybrid drives are great for a OS Drive is you can't have an SSD. for storage any 7200 rpm drive will be just as fast, pretty much
I was thinking at least getting 16 GB of memory, because… I spend a lot of time in Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier Pro and Visual Studio Ultimate.
I was even thinking quite possibly 24 GB. 32 might be overkill and unnecessary. But, if I did go the 32 GB I would have a lot of room for a RAM disk.
If your going to void your warranty to change out the two sticks under the keyboard you might just as well go for 32 and get 4 matched 8 GB sticks.
Should I continue using the OS that came preinstalled, or… Should I purchase a OEM?
The only reason I could see to change your OS is if you want to have the 8.1 Pro version you can get the pro upgrade and clean install 8.1 Pro
I'm comfortable installing a fresh OS, I've done it before. I would just like a fresh perspective on this, some different experiences from other people doing this with this model.
my experience was upgrading from Win 7 SP1 HP OEM. I clean installed win 8.1 Pro MC with a $14.99 Upgrade license
I've also heard of people getting rid of the CD-ROM drive and installing a SATA II 5400 RPM internal drive.
Is that a 2.5 inch drive bay, or… Can I install a 3.5 inch desktop drive in there?
There are available caddies to put a 2.5" drive in the slot where your DVD is now so 2.5" is the answer search Amazon or ebay for one
Could probably make the CD-ROM drive an external drive?
SATA to USB connector for this?
Any feedback or even recommendations for your own experiences on upgrading this model would be definitely appreciated.
