G75VX-TS72 Crash - Asus recommends no SSDs for this laptop

I was running Win8 on a Samsung 840 series 250GB SSD. Before the problem occured I had trouble playing internet videos. Several times I uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Flash, as well as Firefox, Opera, and Google Chrome. Just before the problem occured I installed Chrome and the latest version of Flash. Videos still would not play so I disabled Windows firewall and disabled Malwarebytes and Total Defense. At that point Windows showed me an error message that said Windows was experiencing a problem and needed to shutdown. Windows immediately shutdown. After that, I got no response from the power button. When the power button was pressed the screen stayed black - no flickering, no booting. I tried removing the battery and holding down the power button for 30 seconds and reinstalling the battery. No change. TigerDirect, where I bought it 10 days ago, said to return it to Asus. So, it's in the mail now.

However, I did just receive an email response from Asus and they offered this general advice: "We don't suggest users to install a SSD in your laptop, it may cause system instability issue."

They have not seen my laptop yet, so they don't know for sure that my SSD was the problem. Their advice about SSDs seems to be a general recommendation for all owners of the G75VX.

Have any other VX owners experienced instability when they run Win8 from an SSD?

UPDATE 7/17/2013: just got the laptop back from Asus. They said one of the RAM cards died, so they replaced it and sent the laptop back to me. They installed Win8 on the HDD. I have not booted it yet. I need to reinstall my SSD which has my previous install of Win8 on it. So, when I boot it, there will be to drives in it, both with Win8 on them. I also have an external drive with a pre-cash system backup on it. Not sure how to preoceed now. I need Win8 only on the SSD. The HDD is only for storage.

Asus told me to remove my SSD before sending the laptop in, so I did. My OS was on the SSD. So, the laptop they are getting has no OS on the HDD. I am betting they will put Win8 on the HDD, test it, and send the laptop back to me.

At which point, I'll move Win8 off the HDD and back onto the SSD and try to solve problem from there.

However, before it crashed I was using True Image 2013 to backup my SSD to an external HDD every 3 hours. When I get my my laptop back, can I just use my external HDD and True Image to restore my system to the SSD? I don't know if my backup is a complete bootable system image. So I don't know if I need to put Win8 back on the SSD before I can restore from the backup or if I can just restore the backup onto a completely blank SSD.

I wouldn't, you could also be 're-installing from backup' the issue you originally had.
Fresh install is in order.c.

I've been running a 840 pro 256gb since the first week I got my vx and it is running great.

IE is well known not to be compatible with Adobe Flash and if you must see videos download the Chrome Browser.

My SSD was fine, it was just stuffed up due to a firmware issue, not incompatibilities.

I appreciate the feedback from everyone who is successfully running SSDs in this machine. I was really worrying that I would have to stick with just the HDD. So, when I get it back I'll probably have lots of questions about how to get it up and running again. In the meantime I'll be digging through this forum. Thanks all.

@thelastmac, don't worry. there is no issue to have ssd's in these laptops. i have 3 in my g55. i have no problem whatsoever.

I've heard that plextors are really reliable. I didn't use it myself though.

Don't do any mirroring, especially not on the ssd - you could have trouble with trim and all sorts of stuff. do a clean install. I know it's a bit of pain in the ass, but it will be better for your system, and with SSD's installation last like 3-7 minutes. So do yourself and your system a favour.

i suggest plextor m5m msata ssd 256gb (well, it's my preference :D). i use this one as a single OS drive. i know it's slower compared to Samsung 840 pro but to be frank it's not that slow, at all. i have no problem with it.

now my apps drive is a plextor m5pro 512gb, replacing the samsung 840 pro.
