G75VX at best buy, SSD upgrade and generic video drivers?

Hi all!

I see BB now has the VX AND the VW for sale in my area.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+17.3%22+Laptop+-+8GB+Memory+-+1TB+Hard+Drive+-+Black/7674057.p?id...

I hear the VX can't use generic nvidia drivers, but the VW can, AND, I've heard its hard to get an SSD as the boot drive since VX doesn't have a way to make win 8 recovery discs.

I think I want the VX, can anyone point to articles on how to get around / fix those issues, IF they're true? Can anyone confirm or deny? AND .. any other issues with the VX over the VW before I go vx?

Thanks!

Talking about the VX

For the SSD as booting the solution is described here http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?28758-GUIDE-G55-G75-Upgrade-Notes&country=&status=

For the driver problem I personally had a problem when trying to use the windows 7 drivers from NVIDIA when I tried to get rid of the windows 8. I would imagine that the problems would exist in the windows 8 version. I haven't tried as my games are running perfectly with the ASUS drivers and I do not want to waste time trying to solve this one.

Thanks Drakon!

Just to make sure I understand ... that post says:
a) format a 8gb usb stick with FAT32;
b) copy all the contents in the windows 8 installation disk to x:\

Can I then simply install to a new HD using that usb stick?

ALSO ... is the DVD drive upgradable to blue ray on the G75VX? Should be same as G75vw? BB only sells non blue ray machines ...

or is it possible to put another HD in the DVD slot?

Thanks!

@noneone, maybe drakon's referring to this (the working cloning method, instead of a fresh install).

someone here mentioned before that there is a difference between the bluray and dvd drive in terms of the port (but i am not sure if this is true); yes, it's possible to put an additional hdd caddy and put a hdd there (still, you might need to find a compatible hdd caddy in order to do that)

Yes I was referring mostly the clone option ( it's easier than fresh install ) but in general the topic is useful and answers more questions. Just it should be read more carefully.

I'm not sure if the DVD is upgradable to Blu Ray. I do not believe the port is different but I may be mistaken. You should ask BB if they can provide this option although most retailers would not just replace it as they have no use of the old one. In theory you can replace it with HDD but I'm not sure about the compatibility in this case - you should ask the retailer if this is possible, but in any case I do not see any reason to do it. Extra space is less useful on the go as the DVD drive could be. For home for both there are external solutions.

I'm concerned about the clone option, as the BB version comes with a 1 TB 5400 drive, I don't THINK that can be cloned to a 256 gb SSD, can it? So I think the BB version needs a "full install" for ssd, does that make sense? Can I just copy the win8 directory to USB and install from that?

Thanks!

You do not need to copy the entire 1 TB disk. You can copy only the C: drive ( +system drives reserved for the UEFI install ). You can also copy the recovery drive but in order to use it you have to remove it from the original 1 TB after that ( at least I have problems when having it on both and trying to restore, but I just kept the old HDD windows drive so I can copy to the SDD in any point when I need. It takes more space than just removing it but makes the restore faster than the recovery and keeps the Windows intact even if the SSD fails ).

As for the option to just copy the whole windows to flash it's not working like that 🙂

I would make an image of the HDD, then just re-image it to the new SSD or clone the HDD to the new SSD using Macrium Reflect. (You will need an external drive to save the Image)

To download the free version, just scroll down to the bottom of the page click on the download button.

Here are a few YouTube videos that will help you.

I removed the DVD Optical Drive and replaced it with a HDD caddy, here is a link from ebay.
