G75VW - When Should CPU Fan Kick In High?

SlackROG

Hello Fellow Rog!

I have a G75VW that I dual boot with Linux & WIn7, but I mainly use Linux.

The other day I was compiling some software in Linux and the temps on the CPU were hitting around 75c and the CPU fan was barely moving air out the back, meaning it didn't really kick into a higher speed and I thought it should. I didn't get why the fan would allow the CPU to run so hot and not kick into a higher speed to start cooling it down.

It ran compiling software with the CPU at 75c for about a minute and the fan never kicked into a higher speed, which seemed odd to me.

Looking back I'm trying to remember the last time it would kick in to a higher speed and I can't recall.

Recently I forgot to plug the ac adaptor back in and the battery ran out, when I plugged it back in and started the computer I noticed the CPU fan was running really fast, and with the laptop running for about a minute, possibly two, it never slowed down, it just kept running fast and the cpu wasn't even hot.

Windows also said the ac adaptor was plugged in but the battery not charging so this was giving me a problem also, so I shut the laptop down, removed the battery and put it back in and restarted the laptop and this time the CPU fan was running slower as normal and the battery finally charging. But this unsual high speed of the CPU fan when first starting the laptop had me worried if something caused the fan or motherboard a problem, and maybe now this is why the fan no longer spins up fast, maybe something crapped out, I'm not sure.

I'm a Geek and a Tech, is there anyway I can test this to make sure the fan or motherboard is working properly in relationship to fan speeds, does Asus have any diagnostic software, or maybe there is some other type of diagnostic software out there I can test the hardware out? I also called Asus support and the Tech said Asus has no idea on when the fan should spin up higher at what Temps, I found this to be a odd reply back from support, just made me feel like these people don't know what they're doing...

Anyone also know what CPU temps we should notice the fan spinning higher, or at it's highest rpms?

THANKS

You can use Hwinfo64 to read your CPU & GPU Temps, loads, and fan speeds. And yes if your CPU is up to 70+C the fan should be kicked in. For this purpose just run the sensors.

Actually since I've posted it, the temps seem to be doing ok, I guess the fan is pretty quiet even when it kicks in higher...

Yes the G series are very quite. You need Hwinfo64 or some other program to check what your actual Load, temps and Fan speed are actually doing. I actually run the GPU Meter and Cpu Usage Gadgets on my desktop to keep an eye on things. When temps start to go up it's time to blow the collected dust out of my G75VW.

If temps reach around 96-98c then the fan will kick in to 100% and will be quite loud..

That is crazy that it has to get that warm before full tilt is kicked in. Is that something that is controlled by the bios? As in Asus could release a bios that would let us set a lower temp?

I don't know, If your CPU is getting that hot you need to repaste anyway. my CPU fan reaches about 3500 RPM at about 70c and my CPU won't exceed 72C under full load for 15 minutes. That's accomplished using Burn In Test.

found a link that kind of leads you to unlock the bios so you can mod the fan speed. As always this will void warranty and try at your own risk.

also if you do it let me know if it works.

I'm having the same problem too. Fan speed control is lousy. My CPU temps reach 90c+ under full load in just a few minutes. Although I haven't actually took notice of it before so I can't say whether it has been like this ever since. I've been using the G75 for almost a year now.

Is there any video tutorial on how to do a repaste, because I've read that I need to take the entire chassis apart. I believe my CPU really needs a repaste.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9KHrJKInmA be very careful connection ribbons and connectors are easily damaged.
