G75VW / GeForce 670M Overheating Problem [solved]

Hello ROG, I bought this laptop 15 months ago to do web functions, graphics, and cad. I’m a savvy “power user” looking for performance, but I know little about hardware. My last laptop was a Dell that overheated and shut down often, so I bought this one in hopes that I could have performance without overheating. Unfortunately, this computer hasn’t been any better. I’ve been very busy until recently and I’m just now looking into this deeper. It seems that the G75 is working well for others, so I’m wondering if I got a lemon and what I can do to fix it

I have recently discovered HwInfo and can see that my GPU is overheating and shuts down after hitting 104 degrees. I’ve also read about FurMark and have run that, but it shuts down from overheating to 104 degrees within a minute. All it takes to overheat it is to open firefox and start clicking on links for about ten minutes. When browsing, the GPU eventually rises to 98 degrees, at which point the highest speed on the cooling fan kicks in. It will keep climbing unless I minimize firefox, and if I do, it cools rapidly back to around 80 degrees which seems to be its at rest temperature. I cleaned out the dust for about the third time a week ago and there wasn’t much dust. I recently reinstalled the Nvidia driver, upgrading to the newer one off of their website, and that seemed to help for a few days, but it’s back to its normal overheated ways. I can generally prevent it from shutting down with a strong cooling fan underneath it.

This computer seems like it would be great if it didn’t have this problem. Any thoughts on how I should approach fixing it?

Since you have cleaned out the dust, this only leave the fault to be that your pasting of your GPU has failed. You should RMA it if you still have warranty left? if not you'll have to find a Asus certified reliable repair shop to repaste your GPU and CPU. It is possible to accomplish to accomplish this yourself but if you not Notebook hardware techy you'll be much better off paying for someone that is!! Cables and connectors are easily damaged and the pasting itself needs to be done correctly. Hopefully you still have warranty, and I suggest you PM cl-albert he works for Asus and is our customer loyalty representative here in this forum he can help you get satisfactory RMA.

Thanks Clint! It's great to get some input on this. I was expecting worse, so your assessment is most welcome. I would definitely have someone else do any re-pasting as I hadn't heard of pasting until a few days ago.

cl-albert don't give up on he'll most likely see this thread and reply. I would go ahead and start the RMA process and get your RMA Number cl-albert will sort it out from there.

Thanks for Clintlgm's help and he explained everything pretty well, but let me know if there are any questions.

Not sure if warranty status is a concern at all, but ASUS support can help you check this when you contact them although if you want to send me a PM with your serial number, I can look into it too.
If you have any trouble finding the ASUS support contact information through the page the Clintlgm provided, tell us which region you are located in.

Don't expect this will be an issue, but just wanted to make sure your environment was not too hot or you used the notebook on a bed that may be blocking the vents, etc. Try it on a table if necessary to compare.

Otherwise, if there is a hardware problem with the notebook related to overheating, it just really needs to be looked at and just try to provide some concise steps for the techs to follow to catch the problem as well as mentioning the temperatures you are seeing.
Also, don't forget to back up any important data before sending it in.

Thanks Clint and Albert. I have another symptom that just appeared. When I boot up, the ROG logo comes up as normal, but after that logo disappears, and just before the password login for windows appears, there is a reddish flash across the screen. Is that indicative of a particular problem?

Yea your overheating on boot up and your GPU is trying to save its self.

Ok, I'm feeling pretty ignorant and thrilled at the same time. I took it in to get it repasted and left it with the Asus service tech. He said it didn't need pasting and all he did was clean it. Now, the CPU and GPU are generally running between 43 and 55 degrees. 🙂

I now recall that when I first got it, I was staying in a dusty location for three months. I think it just got loaded with dust shortly after getting the computer and has been a problem since. I thought I just had to clean the air filters as the instructions described that.

Since I didn't see the tech clean the computer, I'm wondering how it should be done. I'm simply amazed at the difference and want to be able to clean it myself if the temperatures start to rise. Is there a definitive youtube video that I and others can use as a guide on how to clean the G75?

No I don't think there is. What I do is Remove the screens and hold the fan blade so that it can't spin. Then Blow through the Fans to blow the dust out the back of the notebook. I live in a very dusty place and I do this every month or so. If you don't the dust can build up into a Blanket that takes dissemble to remove. This sounds like what your problem was then Congrats you have solve the problems

PS Use Canned air, I blew a part out the other day some kind of a stand off. I have forgotten to turn down my air pressure before I blew it out.

Ok, thanks Clint! I guess that's all I'll have to do now, but I think the tech did more as he determined that it didn't need to be repasted. I guess he had more of it apart and cleaned all of the guts. Previously, the GPU would overheat even with a fan under the computer if I were putting it to medium use. I tested it now with putting it on a mattress, running Firefox with 40 tabs open, running google earth, and playing a 10GB blu ray movie off the hard drive. GPU never got over 46 and the CPU was mostly around 54. I couldn't do half of that before without having the GPU shut down at 104 degrees and I often had the CPU up to 100 😞

Anyhow, I imagine you're not surprised, but I think it's good to mention all of this so others similarly situated can understand the difference that dust makes.
