G752VY External harddrives still spinning after shutdown

Hi everybody,
I am new to the forum . I have a big problem which I cannot solve myself. Tried many things. No success. Maybe someone can give me a hint what to do?

Problem:
I have two harddrives conected to the USB ports on th eright side of the laptop ( ROG G752VY ). When I shut down the device, the harddiscs still spinning and over night they get quite hot. If I run the computer they are not as hot. But I want them to really stop. What can I do?

Another problem: Sometimes the fan starts going crazy and goes full power without any CPU use. After restart it is ok then.

Thanks for helping.

Try uninstalling something called ASUS Charge+ or ASUS Fast Charge or something like that, I can't quite remember the name.
See if that helps.

About your fan issue I'm not sure. Try updating your BIOS to the latest version.

Thanks for your reply. But unfortunately it did not work. I deinstalled Asus Charge+ but still the same. There is power on all 4 USB ports.
My Bios version is 213. I think this is the latest one.

My first suggestion is to modify the W10 power options. I am finding W10 power options have become so bloated and complicated that too many things break it now, and it feels to me like your issue could be a Windows issue not playing well with the hardware.

So maybe first try going to your Advanced Power Options, and under the USB "tab" turn off Selective Suspend for either battery or plug-in, or both. I have your model laptop, and I checked my settings, selective suspend is enabled on mine for both states, but then again I don't keep hard drives plugged into those ports so maybe that will work for you?

My second suggestion is also regarding power options, to make sure you don't have some devices that are potentially waking your computer from power off state, namely the drives, but anything else too, like the common culprit which is the network devices. Use the Device Manager > Power Management tabs to investigate that.

Before then if you're not already doing it I would eject the drives from Windows before shutting off the computer, that may be a workaround for you until you figure it out.

I disabled the USB selective suspend. Didn't make a difference. I have two external harddiscs connected. When I eject the harddrives, one stops spinning, but starts again as soon the laptop is shut down. The other one doesn't even stop spinning after ejected.

I checked also the device manager, but all setting are ok.

Its well known that the USB ports stay powered after shut down. The easiest work around is to have the charge + softtware installed and set it to stop early by dragging the slider all the way to the right, that should be 99% battery capacity then it will shut the ports power down.

Thanks for the tip. It's a decent work around. At daytime I have my laptop on power, so it won't work. But when I shut it down in the night, I also shut down the main power, so then it helps.

JustinThyme, I don't disbelieve your comment is true, but it must only apply somehow to laptops, because I have been using an external USB drive for years on my desktops for additional backup and for portability, and it has never failed to shut down with computer shutdown.
