G752VT-DH72 or G751JY-WH71(WX)

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forums but was hoping to get some advice. I know there was a similar thread relatively recently, but the comparison machines were different and I was hoping to get some advice a little more tailored to my situation.

Basically I'm looking at purchasing either the G752VT-DH72 or G751JY-WH71(WX). Long story short, but I am locked into purchasing from a specific vendor so I do not have the opportunity to search out significantly better prices or alternative model specifications. Budget is a concern so the G752VY-DH72 is out of the question.

Main specs that are different:
G752VT vs. G751JY(WX)
Core i7 6700HQ vs Core i7 4720HQ
16GB DDR4 2133MHz vs 16GB DDR3 1600MHz
128GB NVMe SSD vs 128GB SSD (having difficulty finding the interface for this model, but hopefully someone here knows)
NVIDIA GTX970M 3GB vs NVIDIA GTX980M 4GB
Both have 1TB 7200 RPM HDD and both have G-Sync

So G752VT has newer components for the CPU, RAM, and SSD, but the G751(WX) has the better graphics card.

Upgrading from potato laptop - Core i5 M430, 4GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM, 640GB 5400RPM HDD, NVIDIA GT 230M.
Obviously either of the laptops I'm looking at will be a MAJOR leap in performance compared to what I'm currently using.

Planned usage:
Mixture of gaming and day-trading.
Gaming wise I've dealt with playing many games on minimal settings and I would like to not have to do this anymore, but playing on ultra is not a necessity. I would like the computer to last me a while playing on at least medium settings though.
I mention day-trading to highlight that I plan to have two external monitors plugged in. Nothing crazy resolution wise though (22in 1920x1080 and 19in 1280x1024).

Price wise, currently the G752VT is $2,208.98 (although recently was just $2,108.98) and the G751JY(WX) is currently $2,249.99. The G752VY-DH72 is currently $3,097.80 (often $2,999.99), which, as I mentioned, is out of the budget.

So my question is, which would be the better buy (let's assume I could get the G752VT for $2,108.98).
Go for the newer components but weaker graphics card or older components with a stronger graphics card?

Hopefully it's not too much to ask, but any insights that you guys could provide as to what decision you would make, keeping in mind my planned usage, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all in advance for any help that you might be able to provide.

Get the g751jy. Big difference between gpu. Small performance diff between cpu (according to reviews). Get the jy with gsync.

Thanks very much for your opinion, Julskey. I really appreciate it! 😄

Anyone else willing to chime in with their opinions? I'm trying to get as many as possible before making my final decision.

Thank you in advance.

Laptops are normally not all that upgradable, some ROG laptops especially since the CPU/GPU can be soldered to their boards. Normally you wouldnt upgrade a laptop anyway because the cost is so high, and a lot of the heatsink/heatpipe setups strictly designed and proprietary to that GPU series. Going Haswell to Skylake, CPU alone is going to make very little difference. If you can live with the cosmetic difference, I would go with the G751. The 980m is going to serve you better then the 970m and be the biggest difference. The CPU's bench really close to each other. DDR4 makes little difference in these machines other then changing the max capacity from 32GB to 64GB. The 128GB NVMe has relatively low performance in the writing arena, and you would probably be hard pressed to tell the difference between it and a standard SSD. I see very little difference if any at all from my Desktop (850 EVO SSD) and my G752 NVMe drive in boot times and everyday tasks.
(ROG has simply become too expensive compared to the competition with same specs... 😞 )
MSI GE75 Raider 10SGS - i7 10750H - RTX 2080 Super - 32GB Ram - 1TB WD NVMe - 2TB 960 EVO - 300Hz 17inch Display
RETIRED: ALIENWARE R17 R5 - i7 8750H - GTX 1070 @ 1.9Ghz - 16GB DDR4 - NVMe 970 EVO 1TB - SSD 960 EVO 1TB
SOLD: ASUS G703VI-XH74K, RETIRED: ASUS G752VY-DH72, RETIRED: ASUS G750JH DB71 , RETIRED:ASUS G74Sx DH72

Thanks very much, MrRuckus. I appreciate you taking the time to answer and provide the reasoning for your choice. My biggest concerns were the performance that I would be giving up in terms of the new CPU, DDR4, and the NVMe. However, you seem to mention that there isn't much of a real world difference between these components. I personally don't see myself needing to increase the RAM to 32GB (for my needs) let alone 64GB. I was particularly interested in people's opinion regarding the SSD because there seemed to be some disappointment (from what I could gather) regarding the NVMe SSD performance in the G752. As I mentioned, I'll be upgrading from a 5400 RPM HDD (that randomly jumps to 100% active and has multiple items with response times in the '000s) , so I'm sure I'll be blown away regardless. Cosmetically speaking, I'm fine with either.

Any reason to be concerned about the cooling in the G751 vs the G752?

Thanks again for the response! I really appreciate the help.

Planning to buy either one of these at the end of the week so I was just hoping to bump this thread to see if I could get any more last minute replies (in addition to the 2 that I very much appreciate).

Is there anyone that would pick the G752VT-DH72 over the G751JY-WH71(WX)? Or is the general consensus here that the G751JY-WH71(WX) is by far the better choice? At the time of this post, the two laptops are identical in price from the location I need to purchase from.

Thank you in advance for any additional replies

Strictly in a performance match up the G751JY is going to outperform the G752VT simply due to the GPU.
The SSD protocol is different, the G751 is under the SATA protocol where the G752 is NVMe. You will find the 128GB Samsung M2 SATA AHCI OEM drive in the G751s performance laughable and will most likely be replacing this just due to poor performance, Count that as a cost.

Without considering anything else and I had to choose between just these two models I would choose the G751JY. My ultimate choice though would be to pony up to the G752VY. If you want to keep the budget down on that the RH71 is similar in specs to the stripped down WH71. With the G752VY you get the 980M and NVMe M2 SSD drive performance that as of the latest BIOS can be configured in RAID 0.

Sadly the only difference between the Haswell and Skylake CPUs is power consumption. The skylake platform is more power effiecient. Depending on whose reviews you compare they are within a minuscule difference in benchmark tests. The ceiling on RAM is up to 64GB with skylake over the 32GB with the Haswell. DDR4 vs DDR3 is also only about power consumption. I can tell you from experience and trying it that while the skylake comes with 2133 it tops out at 2400, period. I can also tell you that if you want to go through the PITA of removing the keyboard to get to the stock RAM on the G751 You can run 32GB of DDR3L 2133, just have to remove stock sticks to do it and install 4x8GB 2133 sticks.

Dont know where you are shopping at or which country but if those are USD prices and you are in the US you can do much better than that!

G751JY WH71 listing for around $1600
G752VT DH72 for $1650
G752 RH71 for $1999 ( I got the DH72 for the same price during a sale)

Hi JustinThyme,

First, thank you very much for taking the time to respond and for the detailed information you provided. To start at the end of your message, I am located in Canada and the prices are in CAD. The dollar is currently killing me, but the prices for the G751JY (WX) and g752VT are fairly comparable to what you posted given current exchange rates. The G752VY-RH71 is not though as I'm only able to find it on Amazon for approx $2900 from a reseller (not Amazon itself). This one would probably be a no brainer if Amazon carried it directly. I am currently locked in to purchasing from Amazon.ca (with their limited selection) due to having over $1000 in gift cards saved up, so this will take a chunk off the price and limit my out of pocket costs significantly. Any savings I received from another outlet would be eclipsed by the savings from my Amazon gift cards.

You've definitely given me a lot to think about and I'm going to crunch some numbers to see if I can possibly swing the G752VY-DH72. Looking like it's going to be either that or the G751JY-WH71(WX) though.

Thank you again for all of your help. I really do appreciate it.

NAFTA Didn't do a thing for the Canucks! Strange how that works for industry but not for consumers! Last thing I bought from Canada was filters for high end camera lenses. Got them for a really good deal from a guy out of Alberta. Then I see a door tag from UPS where they wanted to hit me for import tariffs of 20% then the deal breaker, a flat rate $38 brokerage fee charged by UPS made it to where the price of that and the import tariff exceeded the cost of the items and also made it to where I could buy the same at B&H photo out of NYC for less! I refused and they had to suck up returning the items.

Good luck with which ever you choose!

Yeah, that's brutal. I just sent a message to the seller of the G752VY-RH71 to see about any potential duties or customs brokerage fees that I might expect if I order from them as it's a company that's located in the USA. If there are none then I could get that for about $200ish more than the G752VT/G751JY(WX), which I would be okay with. It's when it's roughly $1000 more for upgrades that I don't expect to need, then I have a problem with it.

Thanks again for all of your help!
