G752VS Touchpad Issue...!

AvengeTheRev
Level 7
I have been noticing that for some reason, if you drag a window or anything else for that matter using the left mouse button (as opposed to double tapping the touchpad and dragging) the mouse seems to skip around the screen... almost as if snapping onto an invisible grid, as to keep movements on a perfect X / Y axis. Anyway... this has become extremely frustrating when trying to fine tune parameters in programs that require dragging the mouse over something and adjusting it slighlty. Even when simply attempting to highlight a string of text it becomes difficult due to the inaccuracy when doing this. This does not happen when double tapping and dragging. When done this way, the mouse remains accurate, but loses the accuracy as soon as you push down the mouse button(s).

has anyone else come across this, or would be able to confirm that this is some sort of annoying "feature"? If so... is there any way that this could be disabled? Or at the very least some sort of workaround.

Thanks! 😉

EDIT:
So randomly I opened up my laptop from sleep, and I found that the mouse was no longer having the issue described above... but also, none of the multi-touch features were working.

Meaning, I was no longer having the stutter issue when dragging things while holding down the left mouse button. I restarted my laptop to see if I could get the multi-touch functions to work again, and once started again, the multi-touch was working again; I could two-finger scroll and whatnot again... BUT the stutter issue came right back.

This leads me to believe that it HAS to be a driver issue or something that can be fixed with software. I am not sure if or how to replicate this, but I have tried nearly everything to fix this problem. I have reinstalled drivers countless times and to no prevail.

EDIT #2:

-- Copied from a further post -- "I e-mailed ASUS about this issue, and they replied by telling me to reinstall the drivers......... even though in the e-mail I specified that I had already done so multiple times.

Not only that, but they told me that "If all else fails, employ the use of a USB mouse."

ARE YOU SERIOUS? I almost laughed at that comment. Yes, I use a mouse for when I have a table available to me, but THIS IS A LAPTOP. THE TOUCHPAD NEEDS TO WORK CORRECTLY WITHOUT OVERSIGHTS LIKE THIS ONE."

EDIT #3:

-- Copied from a further post -- I have also noticed that the installed drivers, or at least those that are visible to us like the ASUS PTP driver and the ASUS Smart Gesture drivers, don't actually seem to do anything at all. If you change any of the parameters and optionsit doesn't actually affect the touchpad configuration. Even deleting the visible touchpad drivers doesn't change anything whatsoever. The touchpad continues to work as "normal"; same stutters, gestures and all. The only way to change any settings is through the Windows 10 settings. Would that mean there is some driver that is overriding even the manufacturers own drivers?

EDIT #4:

-- Copied from a further post -- "I was able to pinpoint which driver is causing the issues. It is definitely the ASUS Precision Touchpad driver. Once unistalled and restarted the computer, it fixes the stutter problem all together. That being said, just like when the driver crashes, it disables all gesture support. So... It is definitely a problem with that driver specifically. I have tried installing other drivers afterr unistalling the the ASUS PTP driver, but I have been unsuccessful in getting them to work."

I had the gestures crash and was able to verify that it does fix the problem with the cursor behaviour (albeit without the gestures working of course 😞 ).
I have also emailed them and they told me to reinstall the drivers and if that failed....factory reset...Sigh.

The support agent I talked to on the phone told me the same and after I told him that I was not going to do a factory reset as that was just a last ditch effort to have people off their backs (and would waste so much of my time and not fix the issue).
I described again the fault in detail and why I didn't think it was a problem with hardware and that I believed it was a bug with the driver.
They allowed me to escalate to level 2 support (earned enough support exp) so I will see what they say.
I am very curious to see is this the same in all G752VS models or only a select few.

Anyone else reading this, please try to see can you see the above behaviour in the OP and post here. If we can prove it's a driver issue, then support can test it out on one of their models and work on a fix for this incredibly annoying fault.

I wouldn't mind having no gestures but scrolling using two fingers is too useful not to have.

Totally agree with you on that. I would rather not have the three finger and four finger gestures any day in order to have the precision back. All I really need is the two-finger scrolling. Lol.

Anyway... please let me know if they give you any useful information! I will be sure to do the same as this is something that is really frustrating.

Yes, i think i saw a video review once complaining about the low quality touchpad. Well its very typical of an asus laptop. Worst ive ever owned, in fact worst of both my pc rigs which i built, and 3 other laptops. Last time im buying one of these asus laptops lol.

But if its really that bad, just return it and get your money back. Personally ive invested too much time and effort in my G752VY hehe.

I went to try the replacement drivers from synaptic but the "Asus support device" mentioned isn't there in the device manager. There is only HID compliant device x2 in mice when there is no external mouse plugged in.

I wouldn't say the touchpad is bad, it feels pretty smooth, it's just that it needs an update to fix the issues.
As for returning mine, that's not really an option and would be quite costly to me in Ireland both monetarily and timewise so I would be happy with a fix. If it was something wrong hardware wise then it would be a different story but software can be updated and the more of us that can confirm the fault, the quicker it would be done.

So... I found the culprit. Or rather, I was able to pinpoint which driver is causing the issues. It is definitely the ASUS Precision Touchpad driver. ... at least its progress? lol

I have noticed that no matter how hard you try, the driver always re-installs itself if you delete it. Not sure if getting completely rid of it would help installing another driver or not though...

I think that is what the second solution that provides the microsoft software that stops the driver updating is for.
I tried uninstalling the ASUS precision touchpad driver but then it just stops working altogether as you can imagine. If I restart, Windows installs some random driver that gives a different name in device manager but which has the same function as the Asus Precision Touchpad one (it probably is the same driver). What driver is replacing yours when you uninstall it?

I think the method where you install a Synaptics driver could possibly work if we could find the right one that works. I will try it out now.

Ok, So following this link (the one from reddit): http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/xps-13-9530-xps-15-9550-replace-windows-ptp-precision-touchp...

I can get to a stable state with no gestures by disabling the Asus Precision Touchpad driver (without it reactivating every restart).

I have tried replacing the drivers of some of the numerous HID compliant devices and mice but to no avail.
Will keep trying new things!

yeah me too... i just have it set without gestures at the moment. I'm beginning to lose hope.

So... I called them and I ended up speaking to a supervisor because the regular representative, once he was out of the cooki-cutter troubleshooting questions, told me to send it to RMA. Lol. No.

I spoke to him and basically explained everything I have been able to dig up in the past couple of days. They are escalating it further so they can come up with a fix for the issue. Supposedly. Let's see how that goes and I'll keep this post updated if anything.
