There seems to be an incompatibility with one of the network cards: after I set realtek and intel to not be shut off to save power in the device manager the problem stopped. EDIT: I forgot to mention Windows was installed in legacy mode. This problem may not exist in UEFI mode.
Hopefully ASUS will update the BIOS to fix it.
