G751JY - Sleep Issues (I have read every thread and tried every fix)

brownstein
Level 7
Ended up following the UEFI Windows 10 Clean Install thread and got the system running well...I thought. The reason that I decided to clean install was because of these sleep issues.
I have tried hibernate on/off, hybrid sleep on/off, reflashing BIOS 211 over itself again, downgrading to 209 and flashing it over itself, etc, etc, etc.

Here is the issue as it stands now:

Sleep works fine after a reboot, it times out at the set time and sleeps and when I go to wake it up, it is instant! perfecto!

after the first sleep/wake cycle after a reboot, the system will not automatically sleep anymore. However, I was also suffering from the 'system unattended timeout' issue where my system would sleep after 2 min. After digging around I found that solution and changed the setting in advanced power options.
But, it is only that sleep mode that will consistently works, until a reboot is performed, then I get the one-time normal sleep.

Here is the secondary issue: The time it takes for my computer's display to show after being woken seems to get longer as my computer runs without being rebooted.
Waking is instant for the first while, but then if I leave it overnight, then go to work, then come home and wake it, it takes anywhere from 45s to over a minute and a half. While it is waking up at this time, the screen is black, keyboard is lit up and the hdd activity light is working away (I read another thread regarding this being caused by intel wifi drivers or something and the wireless WOL feature - I have tried these solutions and they do not work).

Sleep is driving me nuts! and cannot find THE solution that fixes this. I can live with only the system unattended timeout sleep working, as it seems to do the same job, but not having instant wake is killing me.

HELP.

Edit: Maybe I am being too picky? Shouldn't the system wake from sleep instantly all the time? I have confirmed that it is not going into or coming out of hibernate and I even when into the power management options of the Nvidia Control Panel to maximize performance as well as trying some AMD driver fix about disabling ULPS - no dice.

Hi there brownstein and welcome to ROG forums.

After reading your post I can suggest the following:
1. know your current sleep states that windows can operate:
Open CMD with admin prevleges and run: powercfg /a
Make sure that "Hybrid Sleep", "Hibernate" and "Fast startup" have either a "has not been enabled" state or " is not available" etc...
These feature can cause sleep-wake issues on win8.1/10 as you might already know.

2. try to diagnose the issue deeper:
* open the window's event viewer and look for any odd errors
* Open CMD with admin prevleges and run: powercfg -ENERGY
This should create a HTML report ( when it finish it let you know where it is ) that you can query for any error/odd behavior.
If you can't seems to understand it, you can upload it here in the forum so we might look into it as well.

3. Have you install Asus's official ATK driver ?

4. (The following advise might have slight chance of connection)
Are you using Nvidia's drivers version 364 or above ?
if so, Can you please try to completely uninstall it using "Add or remove" at first, then use DDU to remove any leftovers.
Then download any previous version that preceded 364, during installation choose "clean install", customize-> and choose ONLY the graphics, audio and physix components.
* about that " AMD driver fix about disabling ULPS" you mentioned - as your laptop got ONLY NVIDIA GPU, remove and restore whatever changes (like registry) you might have made, as clearly it DOES NOT APPLY TO G751JY.

5. check for any HW malfunction.
Especially pay attention for any drive with "reallocation event count" with threshold more then 0.
you can check it with CrystalDiskInfo and many other apps.

6. Have you installed any special scripts like "Rog Spark" ?
Have you installed and use any RamDisk apps ?
if so, REMOVE THEM, as you have to have "Stable"/"ordinary" windows as much as possible in order to diagnose the root cause of the sleep issue.

lets start from here and see where it leads you.

Sleep states allow the computer to enter low-power modes after a period of inactivity. The S3 sleep state is the default sleep state for Windows platforms. The S3 sleep state consumes only enough power to preserve memory contents and allow the computer to resume working quickly. Very few platforms support the S1 or S2 Sleep states.

3. Yes, Asus official ATK driver is installed.

4. Yes, I am using Nvidia 364.72 but had upgraded to this from a release or two before. I know that I was on a version prior to 364 before I performed the clean install, and was still having the same problem.

Those AMD ULPS registry settings were reversed.

6. I have not installed ROG Spark - although I had tried it prior to the clean install, but these issues were pre-existing to that.

7. I have not installed any RamDisk apps.

Hopefully you can pick something out from this information, thanks for your help!

I followed your instructions and rolled back Nvidia to 362.00. Now, it will not even enter normal sleep mode automatically (I set the timer to 1 min). One thing to note that has been happening all along is that I can see the activity circle symbol on the mouse cursor right at the time that my computer is supposed to enter sleep mode but then it disappears and nothing happens.

Edit: hmm, unattended sleep timeout stopped working it seems as well.

Edit 2: Nevermind, I let it timeout again and it did work but the screen stayed black for almost 2 min when I woke it! Maddening! When I manually initiated sleep prior to letting it timeout, it woke instantly.

Edit 3: One more time and it took 1 minute to wake this time, I will link a video in a couple minutes.
https://goo.gl/photos/d8BmeSNA2wdxLTMYA

Edit 4: It seems very random how long it takes to wake up, anywhere from 10s to almost 2 minutes. WTF?

I am on to something here; it seems that Windows is interpreting waking my computer up with the mouse as a remote wake and thus only following the rules for unattended system timeout, regardless of me using the mouse and keyboard after it wakes up. I followed some ideas in this thread and it seems that if I wake the system with the power button, it follows my normal sleep rules.

This is not ideal for me as I normally keep the laptop closed and use an external monitor.

Eureka!

I have managed to fix the normal sleep (I think).

Originally, I was victim to the 120s sleep bug, as the unattended system timeout is defaulted to 2 min. So, I followed the procedure here in order to change the settings.

I had to reverse the procedure (using the uninstall file from the same link), then I picked the high performance power profile, reset it to defaults, changed my sleep timeout to 1 min and then restarted the computer.

It did its normal first sleep after 1 minute of activity, as the first one always worked, and I was able to get it to timeout after 1 minute 4 more times afterwards. Success!

Now, I have yet to see if my other problem will return as it seemed to present itself after the system had been up for some time (overnight sometimes), but I have a theory:

If I simply click the mouse, without moving it, to wake the computer, the screen stays black - until I move the mouse. My theory is that sometimes, if the timing is just right maybe, the mouse wakes the computer but then gets locked out of functioning before it is able to wake the display, therfore any movements that were made with the mouse get delayed for a time until the mouse becomes unlocked and wakes the screen.

This could explain why the black screen seems to have a variable time associated with it, but I am not sure what would lock the mouse out. Hopefully it just doesn't happen this time.

Glad to see that you manage to find the root cause of the issue... WELL DONE !

about the mouse... isn't it the mouse you got when you bought the G751 ?
if so, I know there are official drivers from ASUS for it - may be it can solve the mouse "lock" you mentioned.

another think that worth exploring is in the device manger, under USB, search for the mouse -> properties -> look for the "wake from sleep" options, usually in the last tab.... make sure it is enable.
Also search for the reset of the USB devices ( root hub, controller etc.. NOT other external devices) make sure their "wake from sleep" feature ( if they got one ) is enabled as well.
