G751jt-ch71 and SSD installation, HD questions

Hey guys!

I'm planning to get the G751JT-CH71, when it becomes available, and I want to install a SSD since it comes with none. Would I have to use backtracker if I want to setup the OS on the SSD? Also, how would I go about clearing the HDD so I can have all the 1TB storage available?
If anyone knows the steps please link it to me!

Ya...I'm hoping someone gets backtracker restore to work with a PCIe M.2 drive and is able to give some detailed instructions so that I can do the same. I figured the problem I had was due to the difference between SATA boot drive and the PCIe M.2 boot drive.

Yes, I've only ever had one drive in the machine at once. That computer never saw a drive in the second bay. So the HDD was pulled when I used backtracker to restore the boot OS to the M.2 PCIe drive as well as when I then tried to boot to that drive.

The BIOS was set to boot to the M.2 PCIe drive, no luck.

I can't play around with it now as I ended up having to send that machine back as the keyboard backlighting didn't work. And when I get a new machine I'll probably just stick with the fresh Win8.1 install that I did on the M.2 PCIe drive before I sent my previous machine back.

kennycol, that's odd, it is best to stick with the Asus install... make sure to keep that Asus Backtracker Flash drive just in case.

Did you use the Version of Asus Backtracker included with the G751, or did you need to download it and install it? Do you recall what version?

Asus needs to know about this problem, please report it with as many details as you can, and ask how to do it correctly on the new G751 when it arrives.

One sinking feeling I have is maybe Asus Backltracker knows if it is backing up from an M.2 PCIE boot drive ( a G751 that ships with the OS on the M.2 PCIE ) vs a G751 that backs up from a 2.5" HDD/SSD boot drive.

It may be that in order to use the Asus OS on an M.2 PCIE drive you need to have started with a G751 with a M.2 PCIE boot drive.

Please let us know what Asus says, and how it works out on the new G751.

I received my G751JT-CH71 last Wednesday and what I did is as follows,

1. Used ASUS backtrack to backup the image to a USB3 thumb drive.
2. Removed factory 1 tb drive on bay 1 (the bay on the left) and install a Samsung 250 gb 840 evo SSD.
3. Restored from the thumb drive to the SSD (successfully).
4. connect factory 1 trb drive to an external USB to SATA adapter to reformat the drive.
5. Installed the 1 tb drive to bay 2.
5. combined partitions on SSD (DO NOT touch the first 100 mb partition - I believe it is for system boot).

Everything seems to working fine except the followings,

1. The extra caddy comes with the laptop doesnt not fit/align with the bay 2 screw holes (recessed space). I had to cut two mounting ears off in order to put the screw back. Maybe ASUS shipped the wrong orientation caddy (left - right)?
2. Windows 8.1 cant do anything about drive partitions - I had to use Partition Magic (free home edition) to do the job.
3. I hope keyboard backlit can be a bit brighter (may be just personal preference).

I actually called ASUS for the # 3 above since I found 4 brighter keys on the keyboard (namely W A S and D). I thought ASUS installed wrong keys on rest of the keyboard (this is my first gaming laptop of any kind). After more than 30 minutes describing/discussing my problems, the support lady asked me to ship the laptop back to ASUS so they can replace those 4 "abnormal" keys. LOL

Preliminary testings are all good. I am starting to migrate applications/settings from my old Lenovo laptop and will report back to the forum if issues found. Good luck to everyone who is expecting his/her G751s

what version of Backtracker did you use
i made a 16GB Sandisk usb 3.0 Recovery
removed HDD installed SSD and had no luck
is there a setting in bios that i can do so the ssd can work ?
can anyone help
SSD is Samsung 850 EVO 250GB

Where did you find your version of Partition Magic? The only version I can seem to find is 8.0, which I already had, and it said it did not working past Windows XP.
