G751JM Best Buy Version

Ok, so I caved today and bought the BB version of the G751JM ( 24 months 0% financing helped). I have not unboxed it yet though.....

In regards to the 860m that is in this G751JM , is it the one based off the Haswell, or Maxwell? In other words, is it the better one? If I remember right there were 2 versions.

I'm well aware that the G751 with the 970m and 16gb of ram will be released in a few weeks for $150 more. The fact that tis one has a touch screen is kind of important to me. I also really don't know how much of my gaming time will be on this as I have a PS4 and XboxOne. Even then, the 860m should be on par with those, right?

In the end , I guess I really want a very durable capable laptop for work and gaming If I choose. Was going to get the non ROG model there with the 850m for $350 less, but the case, keyboard, 17inch screen led me to this.

As you can tell, I'm torn on what to do.......

Thanks, the model number is G751JM-BHI7N27. I can afford both, but the of course the 24 month financing makes it nicer.

Hi guvadc, I still don't own any of those laptops but I think "Haswell" is related to the CPU and yes the G751 has an Intel Haswell as CPU.

The 860m in your G751 should be a Maxwell... probably you wanted to know if your 860m was Maxwell or Kepler... Maxwell is better than Kepler.

The G751JM is the only one that will come with a touchscreen... I think at this point your choice should be made basing on how much you need that touchscreen and if you're willing to renounce to more performances for it. It all depends on what you're planning to do with it...

For more detailed infos, let's wait for the other (more expert) users to answer 😛

You're right, I meant Maxwell or Kepler, sorry for the confusion.

I'm not sure I really mean for the laptop to be my main gaming platform. If I did, I would go for the one with the 980m for 2499. Can't justify that though when I can keep the one I have and build a powerful desktop for the same price.

guvadc, have you used a touch screen laptop at length before?, for work / school / etc - trying to get work done? It tires out your arms, and getting the right balance of keyboard / mouse / screen while holding your arms up over the keyboard gets tiring, at least for me 🙂

Touch works great when the device is in your hands, but holding your arms out for long periods of time gets tiring. The ergo-dynamics of a touch screen on the other side of a keyboard isn't ideal, that is why some laptops convert with the screen in front, or lift off completely so you can hold it.

Plus you get the screen gunked up with human oils and food particles within a short period of time. If you have a phone/tablet you know how it gets with daily use. You end up cleaning it off all the time, and you can't wipe a laptop screen off on your shirt 😉

You can't compare Console performance to PC performance. A PC performing as well as a Console wouldn't play many high end PC games. If you are getting a gaming laptop, then get the top end, or at least the 970m, as you said it is only $150 more, and the performance difference is large.

If you don't want a gaming laptop, but you want a touch Windows computer, consider the 2 in 1 or a laptop dedicated to providing the best touch experience.

You could always get both, a gaming laptop and a 2 in 1 Intel Bay Trail Windows 8.1 Touch device, that's what I plan on doing.

This is a nice 2nd screen / touch interface, you could try this on the JT/JY model non-touch screen G751:

If you do end up keeping the G751JM, please update us and let us know how it works out 🙂

Thanks for all the responses! Below is another model I'm looking at and might return the G751m for it ( still haven't opened it yet. The below model has the GT840M which I do think is a lot worse than the 860M(??).

I really want a 17 inch display since I will be doing a lot of work on it ( work form home mostly) , but the smaller size of the other is nice as well. Are the G751 series comfortable to use as an actual laptop? I will be sitting on my couch to use mostly.

guvadc, those are nice, the newer i7 2 in 1's, if you are only going to get that - since it costs so much I am assuming it would be the only laptop you would buy.

I was thinking more along the lines of getting the G751JT or JY - for full gaming performance, and then get an inexpensive - but fast performing new Bay Trail based CPU - like these 2 new models (don't get the old ones with the old CPU).

$329 => ASUS Transformer Book T100TAF-B1-BF 10.1" Detachable 2-in-1 Touchscreen Laptop, 32 GB
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OBQ59UK/ref=amb_link_426058822_1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=h...

$499 => ASUS Transformer Book T200TA-C1-BL 2-in-1 Detachable 11.6" Laptop, 4 GB RAM 64 GB Storage
http://www.amazon.com/Transformer-T200TA-C1-BL-Detachable-Laptop-Storage/dp/B00NMVEWC6/ref=pd_sim_sb...

Those are touch, fast, full Windows, and very portable, and cheap enough to pair with a real gaming laptop like the G751JT/JY 🙂

A 17" touch tablet, or 2 in 1, would be too large to hold, these are a nice size for touch.

What do you think?

I ended up returning the G751M and did not get any thing to replace it yet.

I'm having a hard time deciding what I really want to get out of a PC/ laptop. I do want at least a nice 15 + inch screen for work and productivity. I've also been a gaming enthusiast for many years ( 40 yo) and most of that has been on consoles. I see an end to consoles as we know it, this current generation is underpowered and will not last long. This is kind of making me look at the PC's for gaming now and in the future.

That said , I'm now also looking at either an MSI GT72 Dominator or a Sager NP8278. Both of these have the 970M with 6GB vram as opposed to the ASUS only having 3GB. I can get the Sager nicely equipped with more ram and SSD for about 1750. I'm even tempted to spend more and get the ones with the 980M and 8GB vram.

If I do any of that , the laptop would replace consoles and become my main gaming platform. I could either play as is , or hook it up to my home theater and play on my big screen.

guvadc, consoles aren't going anywhere... they may get better sooner than their old upgrade schedules, but even so - it is possible to create entertaining games for them for a long time - so that is where the $ will go for development for most consumers.

PC gaming has a long life ahead too, it's a different group of people than most consumers, but even PC gamers get consoles - at least the ones I know do.

Consoles are inexpensive, and you can have several, along with PC's / Mac's and mobile devices - one doesn't exclude the other.

The MSI and Sager have their own issues, you should spend time in their support forums too.

The 3GB vs 6GB/8GB issue isn't much of one. Check what size VRAM the GTX 780TI and new GTX970/980 desktop cards have... 3GB/4GB. And, there is a huge installed base of cards with 2/3/4GB that want to buy games, so no game that wants to make $ is going to exclude those cards in support.

There is no perfect answer, but whatever you get be happy with it - as long as it is working the way you want it to.

Please be sure and come back and let us know what you get 🙂
