G751JL Mats hita DVD-RAM UJ8G6 size for blu ray drive replacement?

Greetings All,

In SEP I purchased my ASUS G751JL-DS71 ROG laptop. The laptop only had a DVD drive and I need/want a Blu-Ray. I started researchng possible replacements at that time, but due to some health issues, I have been sidelined for a couple of months. A couple of weeks ago, I restarted my research.

Based on my Device Manager, my current DVD is Mats hita DVD-RAM UJ8G6 (I purposely instered a space because the bot thinks I am writing Sierra, Hotel, India, Tango). However, I cannot confirm the size; 7.5 mm, 9.5 mm, or 12.7 mm. A tech at Best Buy says it is 12.7 mm. Trying to confirm or disprove this has not been easy. Based on an eBay seller, they tell me it is 9.5 mm.

Does anyone know the correct size?

Also, any suggestions/recommendations on which brand/model Blu-Ray? I do not need it to write, if it does that is a plus, but I mainly need it to read. I have both a hunting cabin and a lake house. No cable or TV, but I enjoy watching movies in the evening. Most are Blu-Ray. I do no want an exterior drive because sometimes I ride my bike to the lake house and I must limit what I carry.

Thank you. I had an unexpected "visit" to the hospital, so I am a bit behind. It appears my system is similar and uses a 9.5 mm.

The only thing you will have to do it change the plastic trim on the end of the tray which is pretty simple.

Also be aware that you will have to buy software for Blu ray playback.

Changing the drive is a simple matter of removing the upgarde cover, then the screw that is midway between memory modules and you can pull the drive out after that. Move the Mounting L bracket to the new drive and swap out the trim piece and you are set!
