G751 Windows 10. When external monitor is connected on HDMI system is unstable/crash

Filing

Windows 10 seems to a be total crap for the G751 series.
Particularly the Intel VGA drivers. At least 3 times a week I'm getting a blue screen while doing normal desktop things (Office, browsing, coding, watching movies, etc)

After testing and research it turns out that when I connect my external monitor on HDMI and do graphics intensive things the system not only crashes to bluescreen, but also HARD LOCKS with a buzzing sound. The only remedy is to press the power button for 5-6 seconds until a forced shut down occurs.

This can be replicated at any time by connecting an external monitor on HDMI, running a movie on the external monitor then playing a game at the same time on the laptop screen. Anything from 30 seconds to 30 minutes and you will experience a hard lock (eg. no blue screen, just a frozen laptop with buzzing coming from the speakers.)

No amount of reinstalling Windows 10 or fiddling with any graphics settings or using different drivers from ASUS, Intel and nVidia willsolve this problem. The only solution for me right now is to roll back to Windows 8.1... but Microsoft doesn't allow that since I passed the 30 day window for roll back. So the final solution, sadly is for me to install an "alternative" copy of Windows 8.1 to get a stable system.

This is frankly speaking completely unacceptable that a huge company like ASUS together with Intel and Microsoft can not offer a stable solution for such a simple thing as running dual monitors.
(and before anyone comments that their system is rock solid, save it. I can crash any G751 series laptop within 30 minutes. I have done so many times at an ASUS shop proving to them the G751 series does not work 100% with Win10. Sadly they can do nothing since it is a driver problem. Most likely Intel VGA driver problem.)

Anyway, since ASUS will not reply on their own forum I will become a nuisance at the local ASUS repair center until I get a full refund or they offer me an equal laptop that does not crash with a dual monitor setup.

Be aware of Windows 10 and ASUS G751 series.

If you did an upgrade try a clean install. I was quite dismayed after my upgrade having a myriad of issues eventually the remediation efforts and time spent dealing with the issues lead me to do a clean install.

After my clean install everything has been rock solid, and I run and external 1080p and 2160p screens as well have played a game while watching video, well I played Infested Planet and the wife watch some X-Files.

First I upgraded, then I did a clean install 3 times. None works right.

Prodecure: Clean install, driver installs from ASUS website. Latest nVidia drivers and Windows updates. Crash within 30 minutes of plugging in HDMI monitor and playing movie (k lite codec pack, MPC) while starting up a 3D game.
Unplug the HDMI monitor before playing a game, no crash.

Have you checked the event viewer to see if there are any useful errors? With something so repeatable it is much easier to narrow down.

Have you documented and looked up the error message on your blue screen?

Every time I am presented with a blue screen it is the Intel graphic card drivers. Every.single.time.
However many times the PC "hard locks" without blue screen. Just the screens are frozen and a buzzing sound is heard from the speakers. No logs, no memory dump, just frozen.

and before anyone comments that their system is rock solid, save it.

I often get messages that the NVidia driver crashed when I connect/disconnect the monitor. Doesn't crash the system, so it's "rock solid" 😄

Mine does the frozen, buzzing thing from time to time on Win10, too, but only for a barely perceptible period of time, while I have my CPU undervolted, I thought it may be that. I've had several bluescreens for no reason at all. Like a blue screen on the log in screen etc.

Other than that, though - it's pretty stable. Just forget the Windows issue as a whole and ask for a new machine under RMA circumstances related to hardware and software support. That driver stuff they gave you is bullsh*t. Politely ask them if it is acceptible for the machine to officially support these things and not work correctly with them - my JY has no trouble outputting to 3 monitors through DisplayPort, HDMI and VGA - but then again I have no Optimus crap on mine and Intel GPU drivers don't come into the equation. Ask them if they have a G751 lying around with Win10 that you could have a look at with them and see if that one does the same - though something makes me think you've already tried this. Though I'm pretty sure that they'll insist that since the machine was designed for 8.1, then that's what you should use.

Otherwise, the only other time I've seen the freezing/buzzing issues was on my old N61 where one of the RAM modules was faulty.

I wonder - if you disable and uninstall the Intel iGPU and block Windows from auto-detecting devices - would this work for you?

I assume you have a JL and Optimus, I would play around with different Intel / nVidia drivers. Check the events from when you blue screen / enable dumps and dig around there if you have the skill set.

Sorry to say it but my non-Optimus JY is rock solid. I reboot for driver / software updates otherwise my machine ticks along perfectly after the clean install.

One of the major reasons I went with this model is all of the horror stories regarding Optimus I've read.

I said that I have a JY and therefore no Optimus and Intel drivers, so you can't be talking to me, but the quote confuses me. He specifically stated that no amount of driver tweaking would help him, either. Unless you mean that he hasn't actually tried it but should?

So I'm confused, Josh, who are you talking to? 😛
But either way, no Optimus was also one of my reasons.

Reply was to Filing, missed the part about him already playing the drivers, rest of the advice remains, however much that helps.

I VERY rarely unplug my monitors any more unless I'm craving for some 3D gaming (don't need to move it for big screen gaming with my 40" on the desk now) then I'll lug it down stairs to the TV, even then I shutdown before the move so I wouldn't experience your issue if I had it.

Sorry for the confusion, just a quick sloppy post on my end.

Filing,

Some additional advise, I doubt this is an Asus / JL only thing, check out the nVida forums as well as other brands to see if there is a solution around.
