Three asus laptops within the family so this is definitely a blow to their company's reputation.

To be fair, this crackle is the only issue that I have with mine. The laptop is generally great. Our issue is also a driver problem, so there's not much point in returning the unit unless you have one of the documented hardware problems. To illustrate my point: uninstall the driver (RealtekHD Audio) and restart Windows. The default driver will install automatically. Listen close. No crackle. Assuming that you aren't experiencing any other problems, I would only recommend returning the unit if you plan to purchase another model or brand.

Yes, that was the only issue left to solve for my laptop too before I returned it. I really didn't want to let it go. But I've read a lot of forums on realtek drivers and even some windows 7 users still suffer from "crackling sounds" on their PC's cuz of realtek. They didn't solve anything for some people. In the end, it was up to the individuals to solve their own sound issues. One of the guys even resorted to using an old realtek driver to solve his crackle problem in windows 7 and in doing so, helped others with the same issue/similar PC's. Being that we basically tried everything to solve the issue ourselves, I wouldn't count on realtek to issue a driver to solve this. In other words, I wouldn't gamble $2000 (the cost of the laptop) on it. How hard is it for Asus to come online and take responsibility for the sound issue? Not very hard. Why should consumers settle for a defective laptop brand new straight out of the box? Within an hour of using my brand new G751, I was already on the forums trying to fix the sound. Absurd. (and I understand some people have been waiting months for an official fix, yet no word from Asus)

Just to keep this thread going my response from Asus support email was factory reset or RMA. I'd do a factory reset if I knew it would definitely fix the issue.
