G751 Severe Frame Stuttering Intermittently on Some Games

Update 01-07
At first glance, it looks like this may be either an nVidia driver issue or related to a glitch in some ASUS-installed software. At least one other non-nVidia user from another forum attributed this to the ASUS GameFirst suite, which I have uninstalled. Further, nVidia forums show many complains of potentially similar issues with recent driver versions.

I have rolled back my driver and uninstalled the GameFirst suite. I am still experiencing the below-linked stuttering issue with a particular benchmark test - BurnInTest 8.0 - but am continuing to try to replicate the issue in other games. I will keep this post updated.
-End Update-

This is a resurrection of my old thread...it seems unfortunately that I'm not the only user experiencing this issue....

https://mega.co.nz/#!jMY2BQ5a!p2BLN3k-aDAuKOtXnkUqJaJkUs6GraX3oiCmcz5xKKY - ShadowPlay video of the issue. (Edit: Added URL of ShadowPlay video taken from my system when experiencing the issue in a benchmark tool.)

Looks like other G751 users of varying model tiers are seeing periodic frame drops in some games at intermittent periods. The video posted on the nVidia forum shows this issue pretty clearly.

I've monitored my GPU and CPU temps and well as my overall system health, upgraded my BIOS(v205)and video drivers(v347.09) per ASUS support recommendation, and even performed a complete factory restore. None of these steps have resolved the issue. I am currently in a back-and-forth with ASUS Support to try and track this issue down. I am hesitant to RMA the laptop as the issue is intermittent and may not be discovered during the RMA testing process. Further, I bought this laptop before Thanksgiving as a gift for the family and am unable to return it to the retailer.

Outside of this intermittent graphics issue, the laptop performs amazingly and has generally outstanding build quality. That being said, I am at a loss with how to proceed with this issue that other owners of the ROG series seem to be experiencing.

Is anyone else in the same boat as me?

hmscott,

Thanks for the links - I didnt think to search the driver-specific forum posts. I'm not much of a forum surfer, really. I rolled back to 344.80 after a clean uninstall. I also came across instructions for enabling verbose driver logging - http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3171 - which may be helpful in tracking this down.

While this does appear at this time to be a software issue, I think its important that this issue be represented on these forums. For those that are not accustomed to trawling the internet for a solution to a problem on a new machine, this may be the first stop before returning a system unnecessarily.

I must reiterate, I am absolutely thrilled with this system! Build quality, performance, screen, and especially at this point the ROG community are all top-notch. Anyone reading this should not be dissuaded from purchasing the G751 series units. Be understanding, though, that there may be issues with nVidia's latest drivers and that the standard 'update your drivers!' line given by support representatives may not always be the best course of actions depending on the issue.

I will report back here as well as the nVidia forums if my stuttering issue continues.

Hello,

i have the same Problem. I have a nearly stock G751jy... only Thing i upgraded was the Nvidia Driver 347.25.
For expample WoT does have this stutter, Company of Heroes 2 also. Bf4 for expample runs perfect.
I cant remember this problem was always... But i am using the laptop now more than before so maybe i did not recongnize it before.
Hopefully there will be a suloution soon. The system is soo good... everthing runs smooth beside this little issue.

Greeting
Robert from Japan

And you haven't come back. 344.80 works then? Not seeing any 344.80 in existence. I'm still within return duration for my exchanged G751. I'll continue to exchange them until the end of time if I have to.

Guys, there are lots of reports of stuttering with the 980/970 desktop/mobile with the 347.09 driver. Check out the feedback thread for 347.09

Official NVIDIA 347.09 Beta Driver Feedback Thread
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/796460/official-nvidia-347-09-beta-driver-feedback-thread/

Look for stutter mentions in the 42 pages, so far, for single gpu complaints. Desktop GPU's as well as mobile.

344.80 reported as reducing/stopping stutters.

Already posted / answered, but you can't OC with 347.09 beta/whql either... this driver has problems. If it works for you, and improves gameplay performance, then run it, otherwise if it is causing problems, backup to a previously known good driver.

It isn't unusual for a new Nvidia driver to cause problems for some games, while improving performance / features in others...

Yup! https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?58736-TWO-G751-s-same-problem-scared-of-ROG&p=482000#post4...

Two G751 laptops, Livechat with Asus was short. They didn't diagnose it, but they did suggest returning the laptop. NVidia live chat also suggested returning the laptop. I exchanged it for another G751 and the problem remains. I just wish the cause could be isolated. At least with that there'd be some hope that a solution or workaround could be found.

I got stutter problem on a brand new G751JT with 970M with reinstalled 344.75 driver. It looks like that:

I had the same issue with mass effect 3. I removed Rog Gaming III and the problem doesn't happen anymore.
