G751 - Problem with USB3.0 ports (left side) and external HD... anyone else?

So, I am now experiencing a problem whereby when I attach my external 3.5" WD HDD to the USB ports on the left side of the ASUS G751 and copy large amounts of data, the throughput will drop and then the HDD will disconnect. I verified this multiple times in both ports. In the ports on the right side, it works fine.

I did some reading and found a forum post where someone stated: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/765303-considering-g751.html#post9836352

next.... USB 3.0 problems..

basically, I had to connect my USB drives to the right ports and the left ones were kept for my mouse and printer? why? because ASUS cannot produce a piece of hardware that functions right! they claim all ports are USB 3.0 and they are all in blue color...BIG LIE! it wasn't only me, I posted this on the ROG forums and every single one of the members verified the same!

My question is what the hell is causing this, and how can it be fixed? I do not want a laptop where 2x USB ports are essentially useless, and this seems to be a widespread issue dating back to earlier models like the G750. Why has this not been addressed and fixed?

If anyone else has this issue please post here...

Yes most people do not have the Left USB 3.0 Port Issue, it seems like a lot to us here in the forum since we mostly only see people with issues. No matter what Max read speed is going to be determined by the external device since USB 3.0 is much faster than any Spinner hard drive, some small amount of speed is lost to the interface.

Before I bought my G751 I read this forum and was really scared of all the problems reported. Now that I have it: it has been perfect. Even the sound distortion I thought I had at first cannot be replicated anymore with appropriate setting of EQ to prevent bass overload.

The screen is gorgeous for my photography work (why I bought this laptop, the matte IPS screen). This is a keeper for sure.

Well yes most people never have a problem so they never find this forum! the ones here mostly are here because they have an issue it's rather deceiving actually unless you understand it is a support Forum. You might have also seen that most issues do have a resolution and we sooner or later figure out how to solve or work around the issues.

ASUS USB Charger Plus ???
It has nothing to do with the XHCI controller what soever.
if it controls somthing at all it is the right USB port nearest to you ( on the G751 ) which is the USB port that is dedicated for charging external devices when the laptop is during sleep.

even so... please see my last few posts about verification of the problem: try to copy LARGE SINGLE FILES ~20GB to external USB 3.0 devices.
make sure you actually running @USB 3.0 speed ( 70-150 MB/s depends on the external device ).
also, make sure using HWinfo that your connected device actually runs on USB 3.0 speed ( check this under the BUS -> XHCI tree in HWinfo - why ? cuz the fact the you got external usb 3.0 supported drive and cable and latop - DOES NOT mean you actually utilize USB 3.0 transfer speed! )
now... after that you've verified that you are indeed on USB 3.0 transfer speed ( aka SUPERspeed ) - try to copy these large file when you device connected to the left ports..... and see if you got any disconnection during file transfer.

Hello everyone...
Despite the utmost best efforts from Gps3dx the truth is that the fix he proposes may or may not work for all the g751 folks. For me I still have the same problem. The left front usb 3.0 port doesn't work properly and I tried correctly all the solutions here. Somethings help and others completely doesn't work.
So far I am yet to find what is the best solution and guide for G751jy.
Any users G751jY only can confirm that they have fixed their problems with that usb port?

What I can confirm is that I am one of the fortunate folks that have never had an issue with any of the ports on a G751JL or G751JY. They have all worked without exception since I bought the machines. Thing is its hard to tell what direction to go in if you dont have enough participation both ways to be able to deduce what the issues may or may not be. Being an engineer for a major electronics manufacturer I can say that most of the time you run into problems like this its a result of sourced components. If there are some that work and some that dont this is the most likely cause as bad batch runs do happen, especially any Chinese made components as they just don't care. If you pull your orders there is someone in line behind you waiting to take your place. We recently had a bad batch of Toshiba IGBT's that exploded upon energizing the machines. Im not talking about a pop either, full onslaught of arc flash with a huge plasma ball. Hundreds of thousands of $$ have been spent going back to every one of these machines we manufactured and yanking the Toshiba IGBTs and replacing them with another vendor.

I just found out that Windows 10 fastboot/hybrid shutdown casuses some usb devices not to reset fully, particularly USB 3.0 devices. When I upgraded USB 3.0 drivers to those by Fernando, one of usb composite devices on my Asus G751JY went enumeration failed. In the descripton I have either DEVICE_ENUMERATION_FAILED or DEVICE_DESCRIPTOR_REQUEST_FAILED. Also in the Device Status I have DEVICE_NOT_CONNECTED. I get the blue info tag the windows disabled this device. Reboot, shutdown, deleting/uninstalling usb devices from wthin windows does not help to get the device back online again. As if the device is not resetting during reboot, shutdown/power on.The device in question has this descriptor USB\VID_0B05&PID_17FD&REV_0023 and has name Asus ROG Macrokey.

If I press Ctrl+Home and power on which is used for crisis bios flash the machine does the full reset/shutdown and the devices come right back online. Reboot, shutdown, unninstaling usb drivers and rebooting from wthin windows does not help to get the devices online again.

Share your opinions, please.

Two ppl with same model of G751 needs to take the SAME external usb 3.0 drive and install THE SAME usb 3.0 intel XHCI driver.
ONLY THEN you can declare that this approach "may not work for all the g751 folks"... i'm talking pure scientific thinking here...
and even so - there are so many variables which we did not discussed like Motherboard release version, the current power profile of the system, etc..etc...
what i'm trying to say is that the guide I wrote - should solve PARTIALLY an a lot buggier problem that officially exist on the G751 with the driver asus / MS providing.
I wrote few post back that the guide & Fernando's drivers - does NOT work with SOME external USB 3.0 devices...
I have yet managed to isolate the exact parameter that can tell us whether an usb 3.0 drive will or will not work with a G751 that is on Fernando's drivers.

odd indeed...
silly to ask - have you installed the official Asus ROG Macrokey drivers ?
have you tried to force install them ( i.e manually ) ?
these are separate drivers from the ATK package ( ATK driver doesn't effect it at all ).

also, i'm not sure that it relates to some other problem I had:
I suffered from the wake-from-sleep i...
, which apparently is solved by reflashing same bios version or newer. ( today I know that this act effects the BCD files for better.... which I think that some windows updates frak it up ).
I also note that prior to the bios reflashing I had in the device manager under USB tree a "Unknown USB Device (Device Failed Enumeration)".
after the bios flashing, it was gone.
I'm curious to know if these issues has some common area.

p.s i'm using Fernando drivers and got a perfect device manager usb tree - no yellow/blue/odd signs there....

Yes in my personal experience Hybrid shut down is not better than normal sleep or Hibernation. They all cause issues for some of us!! Its especially bad with 8 and 10 because you can crash and not be able to get a complete shut down to clear your RAM and get a good clean restart. We don't really need to use Hybrid shutdown because our SSD actually boot cleanly as fast or faster than Hybrid shutdown. IMHO turn off hybrid shut down and you won't have the issue. Beside that you can go into the advanced properties of your Power Plan and set USB to not sleep or something like that if you haven't looked at the advance properties of you power Options there a lots of setting there, perhaps that might solve your issue.
