G751 - Problem with USB3.0 ports (left side) and external HD... anyone else?

So, I am now experiencing a problem whereby when I attach my external 3.5" WD HDD to the USB ports on the left side of the ASUS G751 and copy large amounts of data, the throughput will drop and then the HDD will disconnect. I verified this multiple times in both ports. In the ports on the right side, it works fine.

I did some reading and found a forum post where someone stated: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/765303-considering-g751.html#post9836352

next.... USB 3.0 problems..

basically, I had to connect my USB drives to the right ports and the left ones were kept for my mouse and printer? why? because ASUS cannot produce a piece of hardware that functions right! they claim all ports are USB 3.0 and they are all in blue color...BIG LIE! it wasn't only me, I posted this on the ROG forums and every single one of the members verified the same!

My question is what the hell is causing this, and how can it be fixed? I do not want a laptop where 2x USB ports are essentially useless, and this seems to be a widespread issue dating back to earlier models like the G750. Why has this not been addressed and fixed?

If anyone else has this issue please post here...

HOW TO GET THE USB PORTS & HUBS TO RUN @USB 3.0 SUPERSPEED,
WITH NO HANG-UPS DURING FILE TRANSFER!!!

1. download latest Intel® USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver ( version 1.0.10.255 ) and extract it
2. download the following zip (Image) which contains "iusb3hub.inf"+"iusb3xhc.inf",
and replace them in the extracted dir in side "\Drivers\Win7\x64"

I've updated the Win8/8.1 guide with the missing files.
Please NOTE that these files worked on my G751JT - I do not guaranty it will work on every other G751J Model nor any other ROG serie laptop nor other laptops with intel USB controller...

Nevertheless, READ my other post (link) and understand that the content of these .inf files are DIFFERENT between vendors....
Thus, if you know ( from, let's say, Asus official drivers ) what are your HW ID, you can manually "mod" these inf to get a working intel USB 3.0 driver installation file for YOUR unique HW.

Done that. After I installed xhc:

My Hardware ID is the same as yours, "PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C31&SUBSYS_201F1043&REV_05".
I'm very confused as to why it's nowhere to be found in the .inf you provided.
%IUsb3XhcDeviceDesc01% = IUsb3XhcModel, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E31&REV_00

%IUsb3XhcDeviceDesc01% = IUsb3XhcModel, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E31&REV_04

YOUR unique HW

Is it the PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C31&SUBSYS_201F1043&REV_05? Where do I put it?

well.... don't got much time to get to the bottom of this right now... I'm confuse as well...
I think that the INF doesn't need to contain 100% your HW ID but set of HW IDs with some different titles that the original intel drivers does NOT contain these titles ( with HW IDs underneath )

NEVERTHELESS - I just finished installing @Fernando USB 3.0 drivers from www.win-raid.com - even without going into driver signature enforcement mode, as the driver pacage contains 4rd folder with the signature installer that are compatible with the drivers provides.
I've used 64bit Intel USB 3.0 Drivers v4.0.2.42 mod+signed by Fernando< (>MIRROR<) - I did not edit anything, installed it as is !
I've installed the "Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller" from 1st dir, "Intel(R) USB 3.0 root Hub" from 2nd...then (OPTIONAL - AS I GOT EXTERNAL USB 3.0 HUB connected ) from the already installed drivers list I've updated both "USB 3.0 Hub" to version 4.0.2.42 ( dunno from which folder they come )
Note that inorder to install the drivers without rebooting into that special non-enforcing mode - you MUST open CMD AS ADMIN and run "ImportCertificate.cmd" from 4rd folder named "Win-RAID CA Certificate" - answer "y" of course during the cmd run.

Also I might not mentioned that in the guide ( which i'll change soon with the above info ) - you might need to reboot if you didn't had any intel drivers before on your pc.

Just reporting my experience here: both left side USB ports work on my recently purchased G751 JL with Windows 10. The hard drives are portable Seagate 2 tb and Seagate 4 tb, both with USB 3.

Hello,
Thanks for the report.
Got few Q:
1. Did you used the mod drivers found in this thread ?
2. what is your "eXtensible Host Controller" or "XHCI controller" driver ( manufacturer and version ) - it is found in the device manager ?
3. Can you please try to copy a very large file into one of these drives using the left usb ports (let say a file >20GB)
What is your transfer rate in MB/s ?
Does this value oscillate +-20-10MB/s or does it go down to a single number speed or worst - stop ?

1. No. Brand new Windows 10 G751 JL computer, no mod. Whatever the driver that the computer came with was what I used.
2. eXtensible Host Controller 10.0.10586.0
3. I've only copied folders (not files) of 8 gb and 24 gb, mostly of my picture files. I did not look closely (sorry) but remembered briefly seeing a very high transfer rate in beginning then maybe dropped to 20 mb/s. It was extremely fast overall.

Well... the dropping to 20MB/s is one of the symptomes.
also, transfer dropping and even transfer halt can be seen when transferring large size files...
I guess cause you moved only photoes, their size is relative small ( max 1GB ) and you don't see the true problem that might reside with Asus's solutions to the USB ( which are MS drivers, which do not work as they should ).

I just checked again; this time actually staring at the number :-).

The initial rate is about 150 mb/s, lasting for a few seconds, then it drops to straight line, stable rate of 45-50 mb/s (not 20 mb/s - sorry my mistake). No fluctuation, no drop out.

Of note, the right USB port behaves the same way - no difference between left and right port. My Lenovo Twist also behaves the same way IIRC.

Yes most people do not have the Left USB 3.0 Port Issue, it seems like a lot to us here in the forum since we mostly only see people with issues. No matter what Max read speed is going to be determined by the external device since USB 3.0 is much faster than any Spinner hard drive, some small amount of speed is lost to the interface.
