Well I can live with 40-50fps MSAA X2, TXAA and PCSS shadows on. Screen 75hz/100hz with v-sync, afterburner limiting fps 50 to keep temps in 85 region.

rambler78,it may improve things if you tuned your refresh rate to your vsync and your FPS limit.

You want all 3 of them to be about the same, 2 FPS higher for limit. If you are going to vsync make sure it is vsync'ing at your refresh rate.

Try 60hz refresh, vsync at 60hz, and limit FPS to 62 fps.

Or 75hz refresh, vsync at 75 fps - off if it won't set to 75 fps and only does 60 fps, and limit to 77 fps.

Same for 100hz.

But, if you are only getting 40-50fps, you can turn that all off and run at 60hz, cause running refresh and limits higher than what you are seeing aren't going to help.

Maybe try to get the FPS to 60+ before trying the higher refresh, vsync, and fps limits?

FYI, those that are saying they get a smooth, constant 60 FPS with everything on Ultra, on even the 980M, are lying... Or they didn't test very well.

Not even an overclocked desktop GTX 980 can do constant (not even nearly in many spots) 60FPS on all Ultra in many areas of the game where there is a lot of grass/foliage.

However, if you don't turn on any of the Advanced features, no MSAA, and keep Grass and Post Processing at Very High instead of Ultra, the 980M should be very smooth overall, just not a constant 60 FPS. I'm not sure about the 970M 3GB, that would obviously require slightly lower settings.

Istn't Ultra too much for 1080p anyway? I always thought Ultra is for UHD but I may out myself as a complete noob here 😄

Just got my 751JY (new) couple days ago. Been playing GTA V for a hour here, hour there. Installed MSI afterburner to monitor with OSD and did a lil test... Driving thru wilderness with 3 stars. grass high and msaa x2 everything else maxed I'm getting 45-75 fps (G-sync n vsync on) but my CPU peeked at 92°. I returned to the city and CPU went down to 80's. I'm new to all this but graphic settings effect CPU temperature? Is 90° ok if it's not consistent?

You dont state which G751JY you have, just the first one I looked up has the i7-4720HQ. Look up the tj max or T Junction:

http://ark.intel.com/products/78934/Intel-Core-i7-4720HQ-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_60-GHz

That shows the tjunction @ 100c so you should be fine at 92. Its not uncommon to get within a few degree's of the tj max on gaming laptops in general. These processors also will protect themselves and throttle if they get too hot. You should only be concerned when this happens and you start dropping in performance.
(ROG has simply become too expensive compared to the competition with same specs... 😞 )

I do have the 4720. Thanks for the info. I'm surprised how cool this laptop stays to the touch and how quiet the fans are... Only part that gets "hot" is the metal between the vents on the back while playing.
