G751 hitching hitching hitching hitching hitching hitching

Northforge
Level 8
Backstory/Symptoms:
Picked up a G751JY-DH73 on February 24th.
- Hitching/Stuttering (plugged in) in both online and offline games, every game, steam and non-steam games, SSD and Non-SSD game install locations.
Tested: unmodded Skyrim, Champions Online, Aion, Star Citizen, Borderlands 2

Exchanged for another G751JY-DH73 on March 4th.
- Hitching/Stuttering (plugged in) in both online and offline games.
Tested: unmodded Skyrim, Aion, Star Citizen, Borderlands 2, Shadowrun: Dragonfall, Hawken.

Gaming hangs on the same frame and then resumes but doesn't display the expected flow and animations. Drops 1 fps and a heavy chug occurs but then goes up two fames, and then back down one fps.
(75, 75, 75, 75, 74 (feels like 10fps), 76, 75, 75, 75, 75, 75)

Overclocking:
Nope! Once this laptop runs unmodded Skyrim at 1024x768 stable with no hitching, I'll try overclocking.

Recourse:
Searched ROG forums, Searched Asus forums, Searched NVidia forums, Tested various GPU drivers, Spoke with Asus livechat, Spoke with NVidia livechat, exchanged laptops at vendor (Canada Computers), exact same problem persists.
Last time I exchanged the laptop. Since Asus and NVidia can't identify cause or provide solution, this time I'm just returning this laptop .. again. G74SX 560M 3GB (3 years old) DOMINATES over the G751 980M 4GB. Confused? Me too. It should not take over 100 hours of config/testing/googling/Q&A/techsupport/livechats/etc. (per laptop) to end horrific performance and to get it to function as intended.

Skyrim right after a hitch.

Hesitant to put this here in case anyone starts suggesting its these settings, I remind anyone reading this part that I've run it all on base mins at 1024 with all bells and whistles turned off. I'm including it for the sake of understanding.

Skyrim with hitching. If I've learned a little from ROG forums and this thread, its that the screenshot below may indicate the problem is running it off the hdd instead of the sdd. I assure you I've tried it on both drives.

I will transfer my games and reinstall steam on the ssd to run this test there, and post here, to reassure you.

Transferred to SSD.

Stop and go hitching while playing Skyrim on physical drive 0 (SSD) drive D

Northforge, is the D drive also the SSD? Looking at the top usage after moving to SSD, notice the usage is from the D partition, not the C partition.

Also, some of your Global/Application Nvidia 3D settings are different than mine, and I don't have glitches in game play, so you might want to try them.

Texture filtering - Anisotropic: On
Threaded optimization: Auto
Triple Buffering: Off
Verticle Sync: Use the 3D application Setting

Try running without Vsync and with Vsync - typically I don't use Vsync with newer games, with the above settings changed - I would reboot after making/saving the changes just to be sure the running driver is using the settings.

Do you have your monitor set to 85hz, or still at 60/75hz default? Just curious. I know the IPS panel has run for some up to 100hz, you do it via custom configuration setup in the Nvidia control panel.

The drive partitions are factory set.

I'll try your Skyrim settings.

I'm locked to 75hz with the current 347.52. Custom resolution I can't attempt as I can't do anything that will trump my option to return this laptop for my money back (15 days), or exchange it for another (30 days).

Setting a Custom Resolution is a software change, just like everything else you are doing. You could try setting it to 60hz, original stock speed, or 85hz and 100hz to see if there are any improvements. You aren't going to break the display. If it won't sync at 100hz, then drop down to 95hz, etc.

The partition mounting letters aren't always sequential, glad to see yours are, so you are still on the SSD. On mine it was SSD C/F and HDD D/E and G for the Blu-ray drive.

Eventually you will want to back up your recovery partition using Asus Backtracker to a USB 3.0 16GB flash drive, you can use to restore the original out of the box OS install - and then you can delete the Recovery partition of 20GB and the D partition and combine all the free space into your C partition for more breathing room.

Thank you for the partition breathing room suggestion, but would that not move the factory reset option off the laptop?

I'd rather try another driver that allows different refresh rate.

I can't remember which driver gave me the option of 60hz/75hz. Downloading all drivers for testing unmodded Skyrim at various hz settings for hitch issue resolution.
47431

Going backwards, 345.20 has 60 hz, but no other option. Running skyrim with perf mon.

345.20 @60hz before starting up unmodded Skyrim

After hitching alt+tab to perf mon

Yes
Physical drive 0 (C and D) SSD
Physical drive 1 (E and F) HDD

Northforge, it helps to sort the bottom view by usage Read/Write like the top, and grow the size so you can see the file path/name in full.

Are you seeing glitches with the 345.20? That seems a bit too old... for a 980m to use.

I think the optimal one is supposed to be 344.75 or 344.80.

Also, you probably want to find your tuning suggestions on a Skyrim support site, or google for skyrim 980m settings.

See if setting performance preference to Applications instead of Background processing helps.

47440

Turn off anti-virus and any other background services you can find running that you don't need - that is what you are supposed to be looking for in the Resource Monitor window - not just top disk activity but also top CPU activity, Network Activity, etc.

BTW, every time you do a Custom => Clean Install of the Nvidia driver you need to reset the Nvidia Global 3D settings and set the 3D optimization to those settings again - the Custom=>Clean Install resets them to defaults again.
