G750JX Wifi issue. (Windows 8.1, latest drivers)

Ever since I got my G750JX, I've had issues with the wifi adapter losing access to the internet (Qualcom Atheros).

About 90% of the time when I wake my laptop, it's connected to my modem, but doesn't have internet access. Trying to 'repair' the connection doesn't work, but manually disconnecting and then connecting the wifi resolves the issue instantly 100% of the time.

This also happens, although less frequently, while actively using my laptop (during Guild Wars 2 which is incredibly annoying). The wifi signal becomes 'limited', and only disconnectng and reconnecting will fix it.

It's definitely not an issue with my actual connection, as when this happens all my other wifi-connected devices are fine, including my iPhone and second Sony Vaio laptop (and my connection is very stable and never disconnects).

This issue has persisted through windows 8 (initial driver), updating the driver to the latest windows 8 one, then upgrading to windows 8.1 and then getting the latest driver for that (from http://www.asus.com/ROG_ROG/ASUS_ROG_G750JX/#support).
I should note that I haven't changed any adapter settings from the default as-purchased ones. Does the G750JX come with some weird default?

I found a solution to my problem. Let me start by saying I have a 12 year career working with servers and networks so I feel comfortable making this change. I would consult someone else in-the-know if you’re worried this change will mess up your network or any related equipment. Hopefully the following will help solve your issue.

I mentioned earlier that I disabled UPnP (Universal Plug and Play). UPnP is software that is supposed to make connecting network-based electronic devices simple but I have found all it does is digitally clutter my network and give my DHCP server fits so I disable it first thing. Earlier I only disabled UPnP on the network end of the router but I realized this e4200 also uses UPnP to broadcast the media server. So I went back into the router and disabled UPnP and now my network runs fine. I was wirelessly disconnected every 10 to 15 minutes before this change. Post-change, I have been constantly streaming youtube videos and 2 audio streams for nearly 3 hours without interruption so I feel safe to say this is a good solution.

To change your router settings for UPnP, go to the default home page which is http://192.168.1.1

Step 1 – Click ‘Storage > Media Server’. Change UPnP Media Server from enabled to disabled then click 'Save Settings'.
Step 2 – Click ‘Administration > Management’ and scroll to the bottom. Disable UPnP at the bottom of the page. Once again, click ‘Save Settings’

Other UPnP functions are disabled by default on this router so these changes will completely remove UPnP broadcasting from the router. If you continue having problems, check out other recent devices or computers on your network (Windows 7 or latest OS) to make sure UPnP is disabled.

Weird that ASUS list V10.0.0.263 as the latest in the G750 win8.1 support section, but at the same time host V10.0.0.274 somewhere else on the same site.

That's 9 versions apart!

Will give the actual latest driver a go tonight and have a look into UPnP if I don't have any success there.

that's because the ASUS Drivers team is taking a long nap! it's been 6 months since Windows 8.1 hit RTM stage and 4 months since it's been released and still the Windows 8.1 Drivers list on the G750JX and G750JH is empty

all the ASUS drivers team needs to get fired ASAP as they are spoiling the image of the company!

I know one thing for sure, my next laptop will be an Alienware

PS: Windows 7 blows Windows 8.1 out of the water! If only you knew what speed I am experiencing now on my machine with the latest drivers
