G750JX-TB71 versus G75VX-TS72

Good evening. I was looking for some advice on a laptop for my son. He is a Building Construction Science major in college. The computer requirements led me to the G750JX and G75VX. The computer will not be used for gaming but will be used for graphic design and architecture software. The primary software is AutoDesk (CAD program). However, they will also be using Google Sketch Up (3D modeling) and MicroSoft Project.

The only real diffence I noticed between the two laptops was the 4th Gen i7 processor and the G750 has a GTX770M graphics card versus the G75's GTX670MX graphics card. I know the GTX770M is better but I am not sure I need all the firepower for the laptops purpose. Just trying to determine if I can save $200 and be perfectly happy.

Oh, the Windows 8 will be replaced with Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate. The laptop will also have MicroSoft Office University installed.

i think you son need high CPU to run AutoDesk program,but G75VX have not provide win 7 driver in asus support site.

So by saying you think I need high CPU, you are recommending the G750, correct?
Excuse the next question, I am not at all a computer guy. Are you saying the G75VX will not run with Windows 7?
Will the G750 run with Windows 7?

are you sure the g750 and g75 are the right kind of laptop for your son's work? I study engineering and almost everyone makes do with standard multimedia laptops, especially because anything heavier would be a problem to lug around all day. There is very little difference performance wise between 3rd and 4th gen intel cpus, the biggest improvements are in battery life. Did you check out the Asus N76VZ? Windows 8 ultimate offers the ability to emulate a windows xp environment so there shouldn't be compatibility issues.

Well honestly, I do not know. I know it required an NVIDIA graphics card with 1GB dedicated memory. The laptops I was looking at were Dell and ASUS with the following graphics cards: NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M, GeForce GT 640M and GeForce GT 650M. All had 2GB of dedicated memory. Keep in mind, he is major is more drawing/drafting like architecture than engineering. So, I do not know if that makes a difference. Everyone just kept telling me that I needed a very good graphics card due to the software. So, I am at a loss on this type of stuff!

at my architecture and design faculties 70% of students work with macbooks, which have at best a gt 650M. Check out the asus N550JV which can be configured with a gt 750M. It should outperform all current macbooks and therefore be perfecty fine for drawing and 3d modeling

I'm trying to find out if the TB71 is a 120hz screen; let me know if you find out any information related to this.

The TB-71 does not have a 120Hz screen. It does support 3D out via HDMI to a 3D Capable TV/Monitor though.

I am a graphic designer myself, I am using adobe and autodesk suites for my work and hobby.

I graduated several month ago. I was using the G75VX. it did the job perfectly. either way, G75VX or G750JX will be fine depending on the budget your willing to spend on your son. Of course G750JX is much better since its a refreshed and updated hardware of this year.

In terms of if the CPU is powerful enough, yes it is. but remember that all laptops cpu will perform less than a desktop. a G750JX would be a better pick over any MacBook pro (everyone had those in my class, and they performed SO poorly compared to my g75vx, which just rendered things soo much quicker and less expensive compared to the MacBook pro).

so I strongly recommend the G750JX if your son needs a laptop. if he does not then of course a desktop would be ideal. 🙂

can you tell me what kind of Autodesk programs he will be using? curious because he could benefit from a 765m as well. he doesn't really need a 770m (G750JX) unless he is looking for gaming on the side. the 765M will perform as well as the 770m in terms of software field, of course 770m has more CUBA thus it will render in certain aspect much quicker.

in my experience, most software now days are more depended on the cpu rather than GPU, so even a G750JW would be fine as well, and youd save up about 200?-300$ depending on the model specs over the G750JX. but that's my 2 cent 🙂
