G750JW bios cannot find SSD when using Intel530 SSD with AHCI mode

Hello,

I'm a G750JW user.
I had used OCZ Vertex3 240GB with 1TB HDD and it worked pretty well and found no problem.

Yesterday I replaced OCZ Vertex3 with new Intel530 SSD 240GB and there is some problem.
When I turn SATA mode to IDE, then all SATA drives are well found and recognized in bios.
And I can install Windows 8.1 to Intel530 SSD with IDE mode.

But, when I turn SATA mode to AHCI, then only Intel530 SSD goes missing in bios. ( empty 1st-SATA block in bios )
The other 1TB HDD, ODD are still well found and recognized in bios.

A stange thing is, if I try rebooting G750JW several times, then it sometimes find Intel530 SSD in AHCI mode.
And in that situation, I can boot Windows 8.1 from Intel530 SSD. ( I have set win. registry to make a route from IDE to AHCI now )

* I have swapped SSD in 1st bay to 2nd bay, then BIOS easily finds SSD more than 1st bay.
And it goes into windows 8.1 screen without any problems.
But in this situation, sometimes when I reboot my PC. ASUS ROG logo shows up and goes loading and then finally get freeze.

* I'm gonna remove 1TB hdd today will try booting with only Intel530 SSD placed in 1st bay.
If, it also doesn't shed green light maybe I need to send Intel530 SSD to the tech support to replace.

* When BIOS cannot find Intel530 SSD with AHCI mode, I can still install windows 8.1 to this SSD using USB stick booting, because it looks like Windows 8.1 installation well finds my Intel530 SSD even though BIOS cannot find it.

* plus, my G750JW motherboard BIOS and SSD firmware are the latest version. "Fast Boot = Disabled" doesn't help.

The only way I can use Intel530 SSD in my G750JW now is trying reboot several times until BIOS finds Intel530 SSD.
I guess there is something to do with "cold boot" and "warm boot" in this problem, but not sure yet.

Does anybody know this issue ?
Is this a kind of compatibility issue ?...
I would be grateful if you could give me some help.

Thank you !

Thanks, us18x
It looks like your 1TB ssd suddenly disappeared in BIOS ?
My Intel530 SSD has gone missing from start.

How about trying boot with single 1TB SSD that causes the problem ? ( you can see it in BIOS whether it finds your SSD or not )
If you remove the others, then we might see the problem more clearly.

cpuz158/us18x, that's a good idea, use the Asus Backtracker flash drive and boot on it to do a restore to the Intel/Samsung SSD in the boot drive bay, blessing the drive. Be sure and pull your real boot drive physically so it doesn't get erased too.

Then you can move the 1TB drive to Bay 2, and put the boot drive back and boot from it. You can then either keep the Windows files around on the 1TB or clear them out.

Let us know if that works 🙂

Hello, hmsctt

I tried removing HDD, then have boot with only Intel530 SSD placed in Bay 1.
It was the same as before. BIOS still couldn't find Intel530 SSD.

With luck, sometimes BIOS successfully found it and I could boot to Windows8.1 with Intel530 SSD at this situation.
But, once SSD successfully gets into Windows 8.1, this Intel530 SSD is recognized as SATA2.

Wow... The problem gets harder and harder.
So I'm gonna ask my local Intel service center to replace this strange one by new one.
Maybe I think this is a kind of compatibility issue with combination of Intel530 and G750JW.
I will try to replace Intel530 SSD with Samsung 840 EVO or 840 Pro.

* Intel530 SSD 240GB : FIRMWARE DC32 from factory, it's the latest version.

If there is someone wants to know more details for this,

Here is the link from the Intel community, there are many people who have a similar issue.
Some people are finally free from this issue after Intel upgraded the firmware, but looks like ASUS based motherboard still experiences this problem.

cpuz158, yup, it looks like you have debugged it to an SSD firmware issue.

It happened for my first real performance SSD, the Crucial C300 256GB - lots of suffering on the early firmware releases - fortunately for me I got mine just as that "final" firmware fix was released, and updated my firmware before using it - so it performed flawlessly - and still is 4+ years later - it was such a good design, they are still selling it!!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148349

I wouldn't necessarily recommend a C300 now, as there are others with newer tech, but if mine ever fails, maybe I will get another C300. 😉

BTW, the Crucial M4 was slower, so you can't always assume just because the current model is a gem, that the next model will be as well. Always look for reviews and evaluations before purchasing, unless you want to be the one doing the evaluations and reviews 🙂

Intel is pretty good, but not my first choice in personal SSD's, they are in a lot of servers I have set up, and are great reliable devices - so if you get stuck with it - can't return it - keep it around for that day when Intel releases a "final" firmware fix that solves these SATA problems.

There are lots of good alternatives out there, right now though, so let us know what you pick!

I am looking forward to the Samsung 850 Pro's when they come out. 🙂

Those look very SICK! I bought the 840 EVO yesterday and wished it was the 850 Pro for the price I paid.

us18x, it looks like Amazon has them in stock now 🙂

Scott, I paid the same amount of money but for twice the storage of 256GB... $200 for 500GB you can't beat that! as for the 850's I will wait for the black Friday season and shoot for a terabyte in $400s range hopefully.

You welcome bro, I haven't had the chance to fool with my machine but planning doing so this weekend.
