g750JS 870M crazy gpu/cpu temratures.

I just installed a fresh copy of windows 7 on my g750js. I have all the drivers up to date and loaded. I mainly play wow and when I do run it my GPU usage goes to 99% (not weird) but my temps skyrocket while idling (on ultra settings optimized through geforce exp.) My gpu temp gets up to 85-93c and will sometimes hover at 93c. where as my CPU temp is a bit more stable at about 59-73c roughly 73 is the max i have seen on core 2. The weird thing is the temps during WoW. I would think that running a card at 85+ will lower the overall life of the card and I would also assume the laptop will throttle at 99-100c but i really don't want it to get that high. I have been trying to fix this for a couple days. I would love some input.

Only happening in WoW? I mean, I get the highest temp of them all in WoW at high: ~70 degrees on a 860m.
Try to reduce the settings of the game (to something like high) and see if there is a significant drop in temp (should be). If it goes to something like 70 then it means it's from game optimisation for ultra settings. If the weirdly high temps come up in any game ran at high/ultra settings it means you might have a dusty heat sink/dusty fan/thermal paste dried up.

I just tested high/ultra settings out in wow and with 99% gpu load it hovers from 80-82c (high) / 83-88c holds at roughly 85c (Ultra) . I have been reading a lot about higher end cards and how they can take a bit more heat. I just don't want to end up shortening the life of the card. CPU temps are super stable at 49-52 on all 4 cores maxing at about 72c. I cant send back to ASUS as I am out of the warranty window. Anyone know if it would be worth re-pasting the GPU and CPU? would that help? I also got rid of GPU tweak, as I don't really care about the 5% boost.

GPU Tweak is not your problem.
Your gpu can take that heat with no problem, bu the cooler it runs the better it will perform and not to mention it will last longer. I believe your thermal paste it at it's end of life and I think it is to your advantage to change it. And from what you can read on this forum most people that changed the paste have seen major temp improvement. If you know how to change it my advice is go for it.
Look on the forum on what is best to use. My advice is use something that is no a electric conductor as well.

I have already ordered the paste, I will be re-pasting myself since I am out of my warrenty window. I have re-pasted many desktop units but never a Laptop. I watched a couple teardown videos of the G750JS and I have to say that I am quite intimidated. Im assuming the GPU is on the right side and CPU is on the left. I couldn't find any videos of people doing anything other than cleaning fans and replacing memory.

It's really not hard. Once you take the plate apart watch for keyboard ribbon cable, you don't wanna break that as I did.

Then you simply unscrew screw by screw till you get the motherboard out.

Then you have CPU and GPU cooling block.

Then you take that apart and you have the processors.

First thing you should do is buy a can of compressed air and blow into the vents (while the pc is OFF).
My G750JX had problem with overheating and downclocking on the GPU half a year ago while playing games. After blowing out both vents for a few seconds temps went down to 60-65 degrees celcius in the same tests...
Now I overclock the 770m to 920mhz which gpuboosts to 980mhz, and the temps never go above 75-76 degrees in any game i run with 99-100% gpu usage. Easy and very cheap, and best of all no warranty void 🙂 Since we have 4 cats at home i make sure to use the can of compressed air once every few weeks.

It sounds to me like it is the thermal paste also. There is a way to manually control your fan speed, an application called NoteBook Fan Control. See what happens if you download that and you set both of the fans to run at 100% before launching the game. If the temperatures still go crazy, then cleaning out the vents would be your next step. If the temperatures are STILL bad, then the thermal paste does sound like it's nearing the end, and must be replaced. The 870m is still Kepler architecture, which runs a lot hotter than the newer 900 series. The 860m is I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) the only 800 series to have both a Maxwell and Kepler version, and the Maxwell is superior and runs cooler. That's the graphics card that I have on my G750JM, and I'm looking to upgrade to a 900 series just because of the cooler temperatures
