G750JH poor 3D performance

Hi,

I have a problem of poor 3D performance with my G750JH.

It performs poorly in games. For example I barely get decent framerate in wolfenstein in 1280x720 low settings, when I can run it 1440p@medium on my desktop (core 2 quad and gtx570).

I barely get 10000 in 3DMarg Gate cloud whereas I should get around 19000:
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/3424674
Notice the poor graphics score (should be ~40000)

It's under windows 8 with the latest nvidia drivers and I have the same issue under windows 7.

I changed these settings without any improvement:
- windows power profile on high performance
- nvidia power management on max performance

I used gpu-z to log gpu usage during the 3Dmark run:
- GPU frequency fluctuates a lot, being most of the time at 324 MHz or below
- Memory frequency also fluctuates, being most of the time at 400 MHz or below
- GPU temp never above 52°C
- GPU load at around 99%

Any idea how I could correct this problem?

Under normal circumstances your laptop should perform significantly better than that. Has it always been this way or has this only started recently? Also when did you get the computer? Have you overclocked it and if so, how much?

Try to make sure that nothing else is running while you game so as to make sure that nothing else is competing for GPU processing power. If you can't find anything else using it, you might want to run a virus and malware scan.

I have the same computer and my GPU under 100% load normally stays at 980MHz (overclocked), memory 2997MHz (also overclocked) and the temperature varies depending on what I am playing but is normally between 75c and 85c.

SamLaibriz, you might start by Restore the Nvidia 3D settings to Nvidia Defaults, and then setting these 3 settings as highlighted

38279

You might check the Program Settings tab of 3D settings to verify the 3dmark settings are at default (use global settings)

38280

I know you aren't using Asus Tweak Tool for Graphics cards, but you might give it a try to pin the speeds up a bit - you can use my setting for GPU speed, and try my setting for memory - yours might not be stable that high, or may go higher.

Asus GPU Tweak for Graphics Cards, currently at release 2.6.4.0 for the G750JW/JX/JH, but I found that unstable and use 2.6.2.0
http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=9&m=ASUS%20GPU%20Tweak%20for%20Graphics%20cards...

For Nvidia 337.88 and before I could use Asus Tweak tool for Graphics cards ok, but 340.43 introduced a bug that causes Asus Tweak Tool for Graphics cards to hang and fail - so since I wanted the speed improvements in 340.43 I am using MSI Afterburner 3.0.1beta instead

I don't know why your 780m isn't upclocking, but that is what it appears to be doing. If you aren't getting Nvidia driver crashes, which you don't mention getting, your card should be running at full speed. If you are getting a message like "driver restarting" - or your screen freezes for a while then comes back, you need to reboot to restart the Nvidia driver - it will remain downclocked till rebooting.

If you are getting Nvidia driver crashes/restarts without overclocking, your temps seem low, it is a bad GPU and you will need to RMA / return it.

You might try uninstalling Power4Gear just in case that is interfering, I uninstall it and use the WIndows Power Plan Balanced most of the time, and High Performance for benchmarking.

Let us know what you find 🙂

Thanks both of you for your answers.

To give more details, I have this computer for about two months but only started really playing on it last week.
I had installed windows 7 on it after backing up the hdd. After I detected the problem and not finding a solution I restored the windows 8 backup to see if it was due to something I would have done wrong during my installation, but without more luck.
So far all my test are on the default windows 8 installation, I just removed mcafee internet security, so it's definitely not a virus/malware problem.

After posting I updated the bios (was 205, now 206) and the nvidia beta driver 340.43, without any change.

hmscott, I did reset the nvidia settings and made the modifications you suggested and uninstalled power4gear, but it doesn't change anything.
I tried MSI afterburner 3.0.1 (didn't found a 3.1, maybe a typo?) and apparently the memory frequency changes during 3dmark (fluctuates a lot between 800 MHz and 2501 MHz, as I set a 1 MHz overclock), but no luck with the gpu, it stays at 135 MHz with some rare jumps to 147 MHz.
I didn't notice any driver crashing/restarting.

One interesting thing in MSI afterburner: I cannot set a power limit, the cursor is locked at the minimum level.

SamLaibriz, yes, 3.0.1beta 🙂 The power limit / core voltage isn't settable on the G750JH GTX board.

If you have the Core Clock set to +135, and it isn't up-clocking on demand, there is something wrong - given all the reinstalling and resetting you have done. I have seen this problem reported before, just googled it again, and it needs debugging at the vendor, Asus to solve. It could be a bad MXM 780m board, a power problem - it is acting like it is on battery power - that is the symptom of being stuck on low Core clock - so could be a power regulator problem - or a sensor problem on the GTX board.

It sucks to find something like this long after you purchase a product, if you have a great relationship with the seller you might save yourself the RMA waiting time if they will let you return / swap it for another one - but in this case the G750JH's are hard to find and they might not be able to get you a replacement to swap.

If you can write up a concise explanation, attach images zipped up, when you file the Technical Inquiry requesting the RMA - it will help things go quicker and with a successful result.

I had to send in a Asus G2S for a video card replacement, and it took about 2 weeks to process - I was able to drive it over and pick it up the next day when the replacement board came in to the repair depot nearby.

You can create an account here, register the laptop, and file the Technical Inquiry requesting the RMA.

I did another test and logged while 3dmark was running, on battery:

The GPU frequency fluctuates a bit which I guess is normal, but runs most of the time at stock clock (or overclocked if using afterburner) during the test, but the cpu stays at 798MHz max (which is normal behaviour from what I read here). It gives lower global score, but a better graphics score although the framerates constantly goes up and down.

There's definitely a problem in the power state detection, the gpu believing to be on battery when it's on AC and vice-versa.

SamLaibriz, that's definitely new / different.

Please come back and let us know how Asus fixes this for you.

I couldn't send it right away to asus. I did it on monday after a few email exchange where they had me restore windows, reinstall the nvidia driver (which I had already done on multiple occasions), and got it back today.

They changed the graphic card and now it works at normal frequency, but the nvidia driver is crashing very often (on the desktop, in game...).

I tried multiple versions of the driver with the same result : 311.83, 337.88, 340.52. It doesn't seem to overheat either (below 80°C).

Any idea what could be the problem ? Maybe I will need another rma ?

SamLaibriz, before you RMA again, try upgrading to Windows 8.1 - you will want to do Windows 8.0 updates till you run out and see the Windows 8.1 upgrade in the Windows Store - then do all the Windows 8.1 updates, and finally update *all* the drivers to latest Windows 8.1 versions - from the G750JM download area, and others, try this list for hunting down the latest drivers:

G750 support areas - The JM download area has the latest of all the G750, with JS/JZ next, the G750JW/JX/JH are out of date:

Here are the Asus posted VGA drivers, it's better to get the latest from Nvidia - currently 340.52, except for the

JM/JS/JZ owners you probably want to keep using 332.60 to avoid random crashes - as reported by a lot of people.
http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=VGA&p=3&s=111

Then do a Custom/Clean install of the latest driver, 340.52 (even if that is what you have now).

Then you should be stable and non-crashy 🙂

Let us know how it works out.
