These are the new 3D V-Nand technology.

The only thing is, their advertised speeds aren't as fast as the Crucial MX200 M.2 SATA III SSD's, which are also now available.

Samsung Evo 850 500GB M.2 SATA III
4KB Random Read: Up to 97,000 IOPS
4KB Random Write: Up to 89,000 IOPS
Max Sequential Read: Up to 540 MBps

Crucial MX200 500GB M.2 SATA III
Max Sequential Read: Up to 555 MBps

The MX200 500GB is a speed improvement over the Crucial M550 M.2 128GB SATA III performance, especially write speed improvement from 350MB/sec to 500MB/sec
4KB Random Read: Up to 90,000 IOPS
4KB Random Write: Up to 75,000 IOPS
Max Sequential Read: Up to 550 MBps

Crucial also makes 2260DS (double sided) parts, but there is no attachment point for the shorter M.2 form factor on the Asus adapter board, and the extra thickness might make fitting it problematic. So I would stay with the 2280SS (single sided) parts.

For reference this is the last Crucial M550 part listed on newegg, the 128GB part, the write speeds on this generation were low for smaller capacity and high for larger capacity, so the write speeds on an M550 500GB part might be the same as the MX200.

Crucial/Micron have another offering that is almost out, the M600 series, but it's write speed is only 400MB/sec... and costs more.... werird.

It's nice to see new M.2 SATA III product coming out from several brands, now that PCIE x4 Gen 3 is all the rage, I was concerned we wouldn't see much in the way of new M.2 SATA III interface SSDs, but it looks like that isn't the case. Kingston and Transcend may also be coming out with new product, but I can't find any listed for sale yet.

For me I am looking at the MX200 part, for my G750JH, at least for now 🙂
