G75 User Upgrades and Voiding the Warranty........

ZENTZU
Level 7
I'm considering purchasing and upgrading a G75.

I plan on

#1 - Installing either a KillerNIC or 63xx Intel Wireless Card.
#2 - Upgrading to 32GB of RAM ( The Machine will host Many VMs when Travelling if you really want to know :>)
#3 - Installing my own SSD as the Primary Drive (Something like a 256gb) and Moving the Included HDD to a secondary Slot..
(I may not need to move the drives, but I would prefer to keep the the Boot OS completely on Drive 0)

Would any of these Void the Warranty?
I understand #1 may be the trickiest followed by #2 since some of the memory slots are not very user accessible.

I believe anything that requires you to remove more than the back panel will void the warranty. Meaning you can put in an SSD, upgrade to 20GB of memory (unsure why you'd need 32 on a laptop as it doesn't have the nuts to take advantage of it anyway), and well I think that's it. The card is deeper in the laptop as well as 2 memory slots so you can't swap that stuff without voiding the warranty.

He might be able to upgrade to 24Gb of RAM. If he runs a lot of VMs this means that every VM will use let's say 2-4Gb RAM. Just a few will eat the RAM very fast.

SSD will not void warranty.

WiFi card ... hm, maybe a good dongle might do the trick and that is that. The good part is that you can use it on every laptop you have.
If the signal is strong, my Atheros can keep decent speeds, I think about 8MB/s.

Go back and ask yourself how many times you've EVER used a warranty. For most people, the answer is probably somewhere between zero to twice over the span of their entire lives. Sure...there are some people who have used it more. Yes, it's a risk to do something that voids your warranty, but that's something you need to judge.

I've been thinking about the Killer 1202 for awhile, and I did some research to find out that it's basically a re-branded Atheros AR9462. Frankly, I don't like the Atheros Bluetooth implementation, so I've decided that I'm going to put an Intel 6235 in my machine. (I ordered it a couple days ago, actually.) For me, good Bluetooth performance is key because in my particular setup at home, the laptop is across the room from me, close to the big screen, and I use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse; the Logitech MX5500 combo, to be exact. Then when I'm mobile, I just use the built-in, sometimes with the ROG mouse.

Typically yes, but with a G-Series laptop the failure rates seems to be pretty high on the forums.

Think about that for a second.

People who have units that work fine are never going to complain about them.

Failure rates are so far lower compared to the other G series laptops we sold.

The highest failure rate G series that we sold were the G73JH.

Ah, as far as the drives go, in a G55 there is only 1 slot so you'd have to use the mSATA slot which would also void warranty.

1&2 might. See what Asus has to say about this. I know Dell does not mind if I open the laptop for example, as long as the "Void warranty" stickers on some components are untouched.

Please see the update guide - http://rog.asus.com/98832012/g-series-laptops/upgrading-the-g75vw/

1) Will void it - the WiFi card is user inaccessible unless you completely remove the motherboard. Get the retailer to upgrade it.
2) Depends on what you buy.

You should be able to pre-spec 32GB at the retailer
If you pre-spec it to have 2x8GB installed from the retailer (in the two slots under the motherboard) you can add 16GB to hit 32GB.
If you pre-spec it to have 2x4GB installed from the retailer (in the two slots under the motherboard) you can add 16GB to hit 24GB.

2 slots are under the motherboard (warranty void), 2 are accessible by yourself (non-void).

3) There are two HDD spaces to play with and these don't void the warranty.
