G74SX sound is horrible.

I just bought myself a very expensive G74SX and am deeply deeply disappointed with the sound quality of this machine.

I listen to a lot of music and enjoy my volume to be very loud and with lots of bass, my previous HP Laptop belts out a louder and much more "bassier" sound, even my girlfriends Toshiba sounds 100x better then this thing.

This is a big issue for me as there are days when I'll just browse the net and have music cranking and music is one of my b
iggest passions next to playing games.

Is there a REAL fix to this other than buying an external sound card? If not any suggestions on a decent and affordable external sound card?

Theres a couple things you can do:

- Find your THX Suround Sound App, Switch it from "Built In Speakers" to External Speakers

- Buy a set of compact portable speakers that have better sound

You do not need an external sound card IMO. Part of the problem is that in order to make upgrading easy and have awesome cooling in the G74SX, is that there is no subwoofer and the seakers seem to be smaller than most laptops....this gives you more access to upgrading memory, wifi card and the harddrives as well. this was designed with upgradability, cooling and graphic performance in mind.

The G74 does have 5.1 suround sound, so if you find a good, but compact portable speakers set, you should have awesome audio. For Home use, if you have a awesome sound system that you can hook up, the surround sound will be awesome...I know thats not what you wanted to hear, but its the unfortunate truth.

I did my research on PC's, and thought i loved the Hp Beats audio, i felt their PC's did not have enough cooling for my liking. I thought they ran a little warm for me....Thats what drew me to asus, despite the limitations in sound.

If you UNinstall Creative THX TruStudio, you can then launch Realtek HD Audio Manager, go to "Speakers", select the "Sound Effects" tab, click on the "change to Graphic EQ" button and adjust the equalizer settings to improve the sound. Note the graphic equalizer and other sound effects are available only if you have uninstalled Creative THX TruStudio.

Thank you for that tid-bit of information. that will definetly prove to be very useful to me.

You can also use the Realtek Audio Manager settings by turning off THX TruStudio.

Unfortunately, the speakers in this computer are crap. So lond as you are using them, rrather than an external setup, there's only so much you can do to improve the sound, especially at high volumes. EVen with the best tweaks I've found, high volumes are pretty much intolerable, IMO.

I should have mentioned in the first post that I use headphones while listening to music, I use a set of Beats Pro's.

I should also mention that I've done a clean install and I don't have any of the THX stuff installed just the realtek HD stuff and that has helped a little bit. but only a little bit.

I don't really mind what the laptops speakers sound like as I'll never use them and I have come to expect all laptop speakers to sound horrible.

So is it a hardware limitation of the laptops sound card or can I fix it with some fancy software?

Maybe you could try digital out to an external processor, and use your headphones from that. (Not convenient, I know, but if you already have an A/V processor or something similar, it's an option.....)
