G74sx or G75vw

Hi everyone. My first post here so I hope somebody can help. I am looking to buy a new notebook to replace my old M50Vm and the only purpose in mind is gaming especially SWTOR. I have been comparing models of the G74 and then I heard the G75 was coming out so I decided to wait. So as far as I could tell the G74SX-AH71 is the latest model for the G74 but its specification look a lot similar to the G75vw with the maximum specs.
Processor: G74 Intel® Core™ i7 2670QM Processor 2,2 GHz (up to 3,1); G75 Intel® Core™ i7 3720QM Processor 2,6 GHz (3,6)
Chipset: G74 Intel® HM65 Express Chipset; G75 Intel® HM77 Chipset
Memory: G74 16 GB DDR3 1333 MHz SDRAM; G75 16 GB DDR3 1600 MHz SDRAM
Graphic: G74 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 560M 3GB; G75 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 670M 3GB
The rest of the specs are basically the same with both having Full HD and 3D capability.
So my question basically is this. Is it worth it? Should I buy the new (more expensive) G75vw or go for the G74SX-AH71? Thanks for the help 😉

I was faced with a similar dilemma, either get a G74 or wait for the G75. There are elements of the G75 that appealed to me, primarily the Intel IB and newer gfx.

Ultimately, I chose to wait for the release of the G75, and having discovered that a local Best Buy had a few in stock, I did not hesitate to buy the G75VSW-BKK5. That was about a week ago. Since then, I've been quite happy with that decision.

I've played LoTRO, SWTOR, and GW2 beta on it and at high resolutions. Briefly, it felt very capable running those game titles and no doubt far more. I bought this primarily for networking related tasks, e.g. running GNS3, and dynamips, networking lab/bench, capturing packets and analysis. It's gaming ability is only secondary for my purposes, and its styling is more appealing IMO.

It definitely is a great value relative to price and performance. From the stock components, very minimal upgrades is needed, e.g. 8Gig of 1600Mhz ram, and an SSD, and of course the required backpack/bag that fits this beast of a laptop.

BOTH
- has keyboard issues, touchpad issues, throttling and poor bios

G74
- Faster GPU than the 660M (best buy model i believe), Slower than the 670M
- Fan intake vents on top (+)

G75
- Faster CPU than G74
- Fan intake vent on bottom (-)
- Thinner than G74

Best advice I can give you; Get the Samsung 7 Series lol............ from the lack of ASUS support for the G74 that we have all seen, there are better options out there

If you had to choose G series, the G75 is not as bad as the G74 but bad none the less, Asus can't seem to get quality under control

The 660 is faster than the 560 the drivers just are not completely optimized for the 6XXm's yet.
the Fermi's drivers are fairly developed.

Correct, the 6 series will be a lot better as soon as the drivers are optomized.

Something else to consider...the bugs in the G74 have been worked through and 99% have been addressed...in other words there are no surprises, and you'll likely be up and running within minutes or hours thanks to the accumulated knowledge especially contained by the fine folks here. The G75 will likely be 10-15% faster, yes, but we don't know alot about it yet, and won't for some months. Upto yu, but a decked out G74 may be the right thing if you like to avoid headaches and wading into the unknown, and just want a stable gaming system to play and work on with (again) no surprises.

Yes I was thinking about this problem but since I will buy it in the summer hopefully already the bug problems will have been solved. The calc no numlock key seems to be bothering a lot of ppl on the G74 :P. Also I saw in your description that you have 32 GB Ram, I thought the limit was 16????

Ty for the correction also the 660m can overclock to match the 670m at a lower power consumption. And less heat.
