G74SX Notebook Keyboard Maintenance?

Heyo.

After purchasing a 751, I need some extra cash, leading me to sell my older G74SX.

However, first it needs to be cleaned in a number of capacities, including the keyboard.

Online, advice given for the keyboard included completely removing it and putting it through the wash. However, I worry that the silicon nubs underneath the keys would detach, as it is my experience that they aren't very securely glued on.

So, what would the official forums advise I do?

Also, does anyone know how to remove the large keys without breaking them? I can't do it without damaging the hooks that latch onto the metal wire underneath.

Thread bump

Edit: okkk, so italics don't work.

Edit2: And neither does bolding. Interesting.

Another bump, cause my sale is kind of waiting on this, and I don't think I should be making another thread.

Exact what are you talking about? There are different levels of cleaning. If you have sticky keys it requires disassembly and often at that point unless there was a spill of a sticky substance on the keyboard that didn't mage to leak through and destroy the motherboard its just flat out time for a new keyboard but if you want to cheap out then it still has to come off and be meticulously cleaned with a mild solvent like denatured alcohol key by key.
If you are talking about finger grime on top of the keys then a rag dampened with the likes of windex works well. Whoever told you to run it through the wash was either joking, testing your level of stupidity or very stupid themselves.

Just keep in mind and dont expect much for this machine because its actually very old in the realms of technology. I have one that the wife and kids use for surfing and documents etc but for today's games, its a joke! My surface pro 4 with an integrated Intel iris GPU blows it out of the water. I wouldn't put its value at any more than $200 for a mint condition machine seeing how you can buy a brand new one with better specs for $300.

Thanks for replying.

Yeah, I know that it's been devalued. Still, it does a decent job, even at games, provided it stays cooled (although it gets blown out of the water by today's units). Either way, people are still paying at least three hundred for it.

I just want to generally clean the keyboard, as it hasn't had a comprehensive clean under the keys in literally 5 years. In the few keys I've lifted up, it's pretty disgusting. Just a personal preference to not disservice a buyer, even if they may never look under there. If I really wanted to, I could put "Cleaned keyboard" in the product details or something.

As for the wash argument, you can detach the keyboard from the chassis, as well as from the front panel; theoretically, no electronics would get damaged (unless there's something that holds a charge in the actual keyboard itself). My main worry then would be the detachment of the silicon nubs.

For actually removing the keys, do you know how to remove the large keys? My attempts at the large keys causes the clips for the underlying metal bar to get damaged, leading to replacement.
