G74SX disc drive struggling to read discs (CDs or DVDs)?

This has been ongoing ever since I purchased this laptop brand new, but it is to the point now where I have to fight with the computer for 30 minutes to get it to read discs. Almost every time it just doesn't register a disc in the drive, whether it is a blank DVD, movie DVD, game, CD, anything. It just loads and loads until it says that the drive is empty. If I am burning a CD or DVD, then the burner sounds extremely quiet for the first 4-5 minutes, and then it works normally, and then remains in the middle for the rest of the task. Almost every single time it burns successfully, but is after fighting with it to detect it.

Does anyone know the problem? Do I just need a new drive or something?

control panel > hardware and sound > device manager (under the devices and printers header) > dvd/cd rom drives, should be a device name under that header (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT34N is mine), right click on the device name and click on update driver software.

try that first then let us know how it went.

Well I did find it, but it didn't have a name, it was just "CD-ROM Drive", and I did the update, but it said its already up to date. But still same result.

Take the back panel off using that giant flat screw and pulling the tab.
then;

take the screw (yellow) out.

using a small flat screw driver put it in the gap between the plastic frame and that little piece of metal (red), do not bottom the screwdriver out it should only be in the hole about 1/4", push the piece of metal twords the outside of the case. your dvd drive should be hanging out of your case about 1/2" now, pull it out.

Read the sticker on top of it and write it down some where.

is mine.

before you put the drive back in, look to see if there is any damage on the ata connector at the back of the drive.

give the connector a little blow, compressed air is best, your breath works, just dont spit on it.

slide it back in, put the screw back, put the cover back.

find a driver using google for that dvd drive. Install the driver and see what happens.

I unscrewed it, cleaned everything out, put it back in, and same result. I have the same exact drive that is in the picture. Is there a good reputable site for drivers? Some of the ones I found are a little suspicious looking.

So I followed the instructions, it was pretty dusty but I cleaned it out, and it is still the same problem.

Can someone help me locate the drivers for this drive? I found some but these driver sites look really shady, not sure which one is reputable. I have the same exact one from the picture.

sorry, ive been busy...

safest way to grab the driver is from asus.

... seems asus doesnt have it...

well poop...

go into device manager, double click on the dvd drive, go to the driver tab, click disable then click uninstall.

make sure your asus live update is running on start up.

restart computer, via shutting it down, waiting for 20 seconds then starting it back up.

wait until it searches for the new hardware. let me know what the little bubbles in the right corner say.
If your comp doesnt automatically search for new hardware - control panel > hardware and sound > add new device.

If possible, you may also want to test the DVD drive outside of Windows (with a boot disk working in a different system?) or maybe Safe Mode (I'm able to read DVDs in Safe Mode on my Win7 G75VW although the screen resolution is terrible) to try to isolate the problem to software or hardware.

Also, it may not be too likely in this case, but you may want to check the disks to make sure they aren't getting scratched by the DVD drive (look for a loose screw or any loose items if necessary).

^ seems as though windows is not registering the dvd player properly, not the dvd drive is not reading disks properly. thats what I got from it.

I think its either going to be bad drivers, an initial bad install or a bad dvd drive, but checking everything cant hurt.
