G74SX-A1 - GPU Temp Help

I'm having some trouble with my G74SX.

My GPU Temp sits idle at 80-83*C

When attempting to play BF3 or other fairly intense game it quickly rockets up to ~95-98*C and starts dropping frames like nobody's business resulting in frame rates that would make solitaire unplayable.

When it hits 100*C the laptop immediately powers off.

I've attempted to work with XoticPC where I purchased the device to RMA the device but the tech support people there apparently have better things to do then help a customer out.

Now I've blown out the fins and internals with an air compressor, much like I would do with a desktop PC. No change to the temps. Searching the forms here these temperature seem high and something is most likely defective.

I have MSI Afterburner installed so i can capture Video (Like FRAPS but free/better compression) it also has a GPU monitor similar to nvidia inspector, however the Fan Speed monitor is null, not sure if that is normal being that the G74 has a shared cooling bank for GPU/CPU if anyone else can check that out that would be appreciated.

-Thanks

Do you hear the fans going? At those temps it should be quite noticeable. One of two things is wrong: dead fan or bad thermal interface with the heat sink. Either one is RMA worthy so if you are still under warranty and struggling with the dealer you could take it up with ASUS support directly.
A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station…

LOL wow holy shizz.

For how long have you had the G74SX and what is ur Nvidia driver at atm?

In my pespective, Your driver GPU is probably in good health, its the fans that are not running at the correct speed % celcuis of the GPU

I suggest you try to update ALL your driver with driveragent or driverscanner.

Man it really sounds like its your fan that are defective

My driver version is 301.24
I purchased the laptop in August/September last year and a 3 year extended warranty service because I previously had an HP dv-9700 that the gpi melted on because of a manufacturing defect and HP refused to acknowledge/ replace it. (Never ever ever buy anything from HP) so I guess I'll pursue an rma with Asus.

Could replacing the thermal compound under the heatsinks help? worked on my 360 which was in theory having the same issue

Also I have the same model of laptop running an intel duocore. speed fan shows my idle GPU temp at 74-79 C and I'm having bad issues with frame rate dropping during games. I also have a tube of Artic silver compound that I've considered breaking out to see if It'll help my laptop.

I signed up and wanted to respond to your comment. I bought the G74SX back in late July 2011 (probably within the same manufacturing cycle of these laptops when they came out), and my GPU is acting the same way. What should I do from here, contact support?

So, popped open my computer and I completely cleaned out the exhaust grill and replaced the CPU heat sink grease with Artic Silver compound. Also I learned that plugging in the laptop without the battery produced much less heat. Now my GPU doesn't seem to climb above 78 C and my processor cores don't ever go above 55 C. Also my frame rate problem is vanished. Honestly I don't know what did more, the battery, cleaning or the Artic silver but it is clear that the combination of these things had a profound effect on my computer. I would like to have seen the temp difference if I actually worked with the GPU but It is much harder to access than the CPU.

BTW I was wrong I have the G71GX (face palm... duh!)

Did you experience that issue when you bought the Asus? I ask it because maybe the problem started when you updated your GPU driver. In an older post I readed that the 301.24 was causing temp problems.

My sugestion is, install the last beta driver, nowadays I'm using the 304.48 and this one works pretty good, when idle the max temp is 40 ºC. and under load (F1 2011) max temp is 72ºC

If you try this and the problem persists maybe is the hw. Also I recomend you to install the HWInfo and look to the RPM of the fans, there you could confirm if they are working.

Hope it could help you.

Having G53JW-XA1 with 296.10 drivers, F1 2011 lets me see GPU temp around 80-82 degrees after racing 10 laps. Is that normal?

That must not be a driver issue as drivers are now have NO impact on controlling notebook GPU fans, i intentionally asked this to another experienced Nvidia Power user.
